Origins: A Millennium-Old Fishing Village Reborn Through Contemporary Art

The Name "Wenbi" — A Cultural Blessing Between Cangshan and Erhai

The name "Wenbi" (literally "writing brush") embodies the Bai people's reverence for culture. Legend says that a pagoda here was seen as a "writing brush" pointing to the sky, a giant tool to write heavenly calligraphy with wind and clouds. Though without epic myths, the village carries the simple, scholarly Bai tradition of respecting culture and farming while valuing education.

The Road to Rebirth: From Hollowed-Out Industrial Village to Cloudside Art Village

Wenbi Village’s modern story is a vivid epic of rural revitalization powered by artistic energy:

Fishing & industry era (pre-2013): Relied on fishing and gravel crushing. At its peak, over 100 fishing boats sailed. After Erhai protection policies were enforced, industries were phased out, leaving the village "hollow" with more than half of its workforce migrating out.

Awakening & exploration (2013–2019): With the opening of the lakeside ring road, the first "new Dali residents" were drawn here by the Tyndall effect and reflections of Cangshan. The first guesthouse marked the beginning of transformation.

Craftsmanship & renewal (2020–present): The local government and "new Wenbi villagers" jointly invested millions to restore ecology and paint the rainbow road. The once quiet fishing village reversed into an "internetfamous village" receiving over 300,000 visitors a year, with collective village income exceeding 800,000 RMB.

Must-See Wonders: A Symphonic Poem of Nature and Culture

Natural Beauty — A Spectacle of Light and Shadow on the Cliffs

Wenbi’s landscape is not about rugged canyons but the vastness of sky and water meeting, and the gentle play of light and shadow.

Mirror of Cangshan & Erhai – A healing blue canvas
From high up in Wenbi Village, you face an unobstructed panorama of Erhai Lake. The blue here needs no filter – it's a deep Klein blue. In the distance, the Cangshan Mountains are inklike silhouettes, while seagulls glide nearby. Unlike the waterlevel views on the west shore, the overlooking perspective here truly lets you appreciate the grandeur of "Cangshan without ink paints an eternal scroll, Erhai without strings plays a timeless lute."

Molten gold sunset – The absolute golden hour
If Dali had ten parts of sunset, seven belong to the east shore. Wenbi Village is renowned as the best spot to watch the sunset over Cangshan and Erhai. In the evening, sunlight pierces through clouds, painting the snowy peaks of Cangshan in a stunning "golden mountain" glow or fiery clouds. Tip: Arrive one hour before sunset to watch the light slide down white walls – the whole world turns the color of orange soda.

Tyndall effect – A divine spotlight
Thanks to its special location, right after rain or at dawn/dusk, beams of light break through cloud gaps and shine onto the lake, creating visible rays (the "Jesus light"). Many artists have settled here precisely to chase this light.

Cultural Craftsmanship – Artistic Installations on the Cliffs

The architecture here is not just shelter; it is art that dialogues with nature.

Rainbow Road – The road into the village is painted in rainbow colors, winding up the hillside and seeming to plunge into Erhai Lake. It is the soul of "Dali's Little Kamakura" – with road signs and the lake in the background, every snapshot looks like a fresh Japanese postcard.

Sea Sanctuary & Huazao Art Space – Allwhite buildings standing by the lake. These are "dreammaking spaces" for Gen Z: ladders, swings, sky mirrors, Moroccanstyle pools. They turn the CangshanErhai scenery into experiential art. Note: Some spaces require a minimum spend or entry fee (approx. 30–100 RMB).

Cliffside boutique hotel cluster (Banshan Yue, Mubao Fort, etc.) – The soul landmarks of Wenbi Village. Whitewashed buildings cascade up the slope, their blueandwhite palette reminiscent of Santorini. Staying here, you open your windows to clouds, deep valleys, and the crosslake bridge, with a 270degree unobstructed view balcony.

Intangible cultural heritage tiedye workshop – Returning to the roots of Bai culture. In an old courtyard inside the village, learn tiedyeing from Bai grandmothers, dyeing the blues of Cangshan and greens of Erhai into a scarf – take home a unique memory of Dali.

Photography tips:

Rainbow Road: Best spot is the bend in the middle of the village. Use a telephoto lens to compress the background – have the subject stand on the crosswalk with Erhai Lake behind.

Sunset mountain & sea coffee: In front of a log cabin with daisylike flowers, with snowcapped mountains and blue lake in the background – very photogenic.

Cliffside viewing platform: Use a wideangle lens to frame the cliff architecture with distant Cangshan and Erhai.

Key: Outfit matters! Wear pure white or bright yellow dresses for contrast with the rainbow road and blue background.

Tip: No need for stiff poses – run, turn, capture natural motions.

Stay overnight at a clifftop seaview guesthouse

Top-tier experience: Stay at "Miyue" or "Mubao Fort" for infinity pools and floating breakfasts (book months ahead).

Value option: Higherup hotels like "Xiyun Seaview" – equally open views, more affordable.

Practical Guide: Transport, Accommodation & Seasons

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

How to Get There

Wenbi Village is on the East Erhai Ring Road, well-connected to major hubs.

From Dali Old Town: Recommend taxi / self-drive / e-scooter. ~30 min, taxi ~50-70 RMB. Navigate to "Wenbi Village".

From Dali Railway Station / Airport: Taxi / private car. ~2025 min. The airport is especially close (~20 min) – perfect as a first or last stop.

Erhai Lakeside tour: Private car / self-drive. Wenbi is on the most scenic section of the east road – great as a midday stop.

Important note for return travel: Wenbi is remote at night. If staying for sunset, book a ridehailing car in advance or ask your guesthouse host to arrange a trusted driver to avoid being stranded.

Best Time to Visit

All seasons are fine, but a clear-sky sunset is absolute peak.

Spring/Autumn (Mar-May, Sep-Nov): Pleasant weather, clear skies. Cherry blossoms in spring, crisp visibility in autumn.

Summer (Jun-Aug): Lush Cangshan, but rainy season may hide sunsets. Good for lakeside cycling and water activities.

Winter (Dec-Feb): Black-headed gulls return, shimmering lake. Off-peak but with many gulls and the best chance to see "jadebelt clouds" over Cangshan and snowy peaks.

 Accommodation Options

Inside the village (first choice)

Top-tier cliff guesthouses (e.g. Miyue, Mubao Fort)

Experience: Live right in the scenery – infinity pools, rooftop terraces, sunrise and stars.

Downsides: Expensive (800-2000 RMB/night), very hard to book in peak season, often on steep slopes with stairs.

For: Honeymooners, those seeking ultimate experience, with budget.

Midhill boutique guesthouses (e.g. Manyue Jimu, Xiyun Hotel)

Experience: Great value, slightly lower but still wide views, stylish design.

For: Most travelers wanting convenience and value.

Outside the village (for touring multiple sites)

Dali Old Town / Xiaguan downtown: Wide range, vibrant nightlife – for those who like excitement and day trips to other attractions.

Extended Journeys: Classic Circuits in Western Yunnan

Classic 4-day loop: Dali (Wenbi / Old Town) → Erhai loop (Xizhou / Shuanglang) → Lijiang (Dayan / Shuhe) → Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Blue Moon Valley). A marriage of romantic scenery and snowy majesty.

Off-he-beat-path: Combine Wenbi with Shaxi Ancient Town and Nuodeng Old Village, experiencing the “quiet” that inspired “Meet Yourself” (TV drama), even quieter than Dali.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
