Origin: From Ancient Capital to Famous City of Literature

Furong Ancient Town

The Beginning of City-building-The Splendid Royal Power of Nanzhao and Dali
The central role of Dali as a cultural hub was established as early as the Tang Dynasty. In 738 AD, King Pilo Ge of Nanzhao unified the six vassal states with Tang Dynasty support, founding the Nanzhao Kingdom and establishing its capital at Taihe City (near present-day Taihe Village in Dali). By 779 AD, Yimouxun relocated the capital to Yangjumei City (west of modern Dali Ancient Town), laying the foundation for the current urban area to serve as the capital.
In 937 AD, the Bai ethnic noble Duan Siping established the Dali Kingdom, still taking Yangjumei City as its capital. During the Dali Kingdom period (equivalent to the Song Dynasty), Buddhism flourished, earning it the title of "Wonderful Fragrance Buddhist Kingdom," with social stability and cultural prosperity. This era saw Dali become a "cultural crossroads of Asia" connecting Central Plains, Xizang, and South and Southeast Asia, as well as a key hub on the Ancient Tea-Horse Road. Although the newly built city at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (i.e., the present-day Dali Ancient City) did not completely overlap with the Nanzhao-Dali capital, their cultural lineage remained consistent, with an unbroken spiritual core.

Famous Literature City-From Military Fortress to Cultural City
In the 15th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, after General Mu Ying captured Dali, he built the present-day Dali City in the east of Yangjumei City to consolidate his rule, establishing it as the military and political center of western Yunnan. The city was square and well-organized, with gates and watchtowers on all four sides, and its walls were tall and sturdy.
Yet Dali's defining legacy lies not in military prowess but in cultural depth. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the influx of Han Chinese settlers and their military forces forged a profound fusion with the indigenous Bai ethnic culture. Dali's literati revered Confucianism and education, while the flourishing imperial examination system nurtured generations of talents, earning the city its epithet "Land of Literature and Classics" (a plaque prominently displayed above the southern gate). This cultural ethos, combined with the breathtaking landscapes of Cangshan and Erhai, cultivated Dali's distinctive philosophy of life—characterized by leisure, elegance, and inclusiveness. These elements have endowed this frontier city with an enduring poetic allure that continues to captivate visitors.

Natural Painting-The Land Art of Cangshan and Erhai
The soul of the ancient city is endowed by the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake. This is not merely a backdrop, but the entire context of life in the ancient city.
The Nineteen Peaks of Cangshan Mountain: Like a colossal emerald screen, they stand majestically on the western side of the ancient city. The summit, Malong Peak, rises to 4,122 meters. Scenic spots such as Qingbi Stream and Jade Belt Path dot the landscape. Visitors can take the Cangshan Gantong or Xima Tan cable cars to explore the mountains, offering panoramic views of the ancient city and Erhai Lake. The snow-capped peaks remain perpetually frozen, with "Cangshan Snow" being the foremost of the "Four Seasons of Wind, Flower, Snow, and Moon" poetic imagery.
Erhai Lake: This plateau lake, shaped like a human ear, boasts vast emerald waters and lies adjacent to the eastern side of the ancient city. The Erhai Ecological Corridor is a paradise for cycling and strolling. From the ancient city towers or the rooftops of suitable inns, watching the "Erhai Moon" reflect the snow-capped Cangshan Mountains offers an utterly romantic experience. "The wind of Xiaguan, the flowers of Shangguan, the snow of Cangshan, and the moon of Erhai" together compose the most enchanting poetic landscape of Dali.

Urban Texture-Chessboard Pattern and Colorful Life Flow
The layout of the ancient city is square, and the streets are arranged in a grid pattern.
-Ancient City Wall and Gates: The current wall was restored in the 1980s, with the South Gate (Wenxian Tower) being the most imposing and a landmark of the ancient city. Climbing up here offers a panoramic view of Erhai Lake. A stroll along the wall is the best way to experience the grandeur and scale of the ancient city.
-Fuxing Road and Renmin Road: The central axis and soul of the ancient city. Fuxing Road stretches from the South Gate in the south to the Christian Church in the north, lined with bustling shops. Renmin Road, on the other hand, exudes a more artistic and free-spirited vibe, once home to countless street performers, artisans, and unique boutiques, embodying the essence of the 'Dali Dream.'
-Chinatown (Huguo Road): Named after the influx of foreign tourists in the 1980s, this vibrant neighborhood is home to cafes, Western restaurants, and bookstores, serving as a living showcase of East-West cultural fusion—perfect for unwinding and daydreaming.
-Streams Flowing Through the City: The pristine springs of Cangshan's Eighteen Creeks meander through the ancient city's underground waterways, transforming into open channels in select lanes. Their ceaseless murmuring flows day and night, infusing the city with vitality and serenity, creating the idyllic scene of 'every household with flowing water and blooming flowers.'

Architectural Code-The Delicate Aesthetics of Bai Ethnic Group's Dwellings
The buildings in the ancient city are mainly the traditional dwellings of the Bai nationality, with a Chinese style.
-Three bays with a screen wall, four sides enclosing five courtyards: This is the classic layout of Bai ethnic group's dwellings. The three-bay design features three side rooms and a central screen wall, emphasizing natural lighting and wind protection. The screen wall often displays inscriptions or intricate paintings. The four-sided courtyard with five inner courtyards creates a more expansive layout. The buildings typically have two stories, with whitewashed walls, black-tiled roofs, and upturned eaves.
-Gate Tower and Paintings: The most spectacular feature of Bai ethnic group's dwellings is the gate tower, crafted through diverse techniques including clay sculpture, wood carving, painting, stone engraving, and marble screens. The intricate interlocking bracket sets showcase exquisite craftsmanship. The murals adorning walls and beams depict landscapes, floral and avian motifs, as well as narrative scenes, all rendered in vibrant hues symbolizing auspiciousness.
-Catholic Church: A rare blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, featuring Bai ethnic-style overhanging eaves and bracket sets on the exterior, and a Gothic dome with stained glass windows inside. It stands in the ancient city, symbolizing cultural inclusiveness.

Photography Tips:
The best vantage point for panoramic shots is either the Cangshan Gantong Cableway or the ancient city's southern gate tower, offering sweeping views of the historic site, Erhai Lake, and the surrounding countryside.
As evening falls on Renmin Road, shop lights come on and pedestrians gather, creating an ideal setting for capturing the vibrant street life.
Use waterways to capture reflections of streams, flowers, trees, and houses along the banks, especially when the morning light is soft.
At Cai Village or Longkan Wharf by Erhai Lake, the ancient town framed by Cangshan Mountain takes on breathtaking beauty against the lake's backdrop, especially during sunrise and sunset.

Core Experience: Immersive Guide to Dali Life

Five Must-Do Things to Unlock the Complete Ancient City Tour
1. A sunset spectacle on the city wall: At dusk, ascend the southern gate to the rampart and proceed westward. Watch the sunset's golden glow transform the Cangshan's nineteen peaks into crimson hues, with light dancing across the ancient city's blue-tiled roofs until the lanterns are lit, immersing you in the grandeur and serenity of nature.
2. Indulge in afternoon coffee at a café while reading a leisurely book: Find a café with a special charm on Renmin Road or Yangren Street, settle into a street-facing seat or a tranquil courtyard. Order a cup of Yunnan small-grain coffee and immerse yourself in a book free from worldly concerns, letting the "Dali time" slip away in languid ease.
3. Learn tie-dye and take home a piece of blue sky and white clouds: Visit Zhoucheng (the birthplace of Bai ethnic group's tie-dye) near the ancient city or the experience workshop within the ancient city. Under the guidance of a Bai ethnic woman, create a tie-dye fabric by hand using indigo dye. The blue-and-white pattern, reminiscent of Dali's azure skies and fluffy clouds, makes the most heartwarming souvenir.
4. Savor a taste of Bai ethnic cuisine and experience three distinctive flavors of life:
Must-try dishes: clay pot fish, spicy sour fish, roasted or fried milk fan (a traditional dish), raw skin (a distinctive Bai ethnic group delicacy), and Yongping yellow-braised chicken.
-Snack Delicacies: Grilled rice cakes, cold chicken rice noodles, and Xizhou rice cakes.
-Cultural Experience: Watch and savor the 'Bai Ethnic Three-Stage Tea' (first bitter, second sweet, third lingering aftertaste), reflecting on life's wisdom.
5. Rent a bicycle and ride through the breeze of Erhai Lake: Departing from the ancient town, cycle into the Erhai Ecological Corridor. Riding with the wind in your face, you'll find vast emerald waters on your left and Bai ethnic villages with pastoral landscapes on your right. This is the ultimate way to experience Dali through your body.

A Complete Guide to Travel: Transportation, Accommodation and Season

Getting There: A Seamless Guide
Dali is a transportation hub in western Yunnan, with an airport and a railway station.
-Air travel: Dali Fengyi Airport offers flights to major cities across China. The airport is about a 30-minute drive from the ancient town, accessible via airport shuttle buses or taxis.
-High-speed Rail/Train (Most Recommended): Dali Station serves as the terminus for high-speed trains, offering convenient access from Kunming, Lijiang, and other nearby cities. After exiting the station, you can take the Santazhong Special Line bus or a taxi (approximately 30 minutes) to reach the Ancient Town directly.
-Self-driving: The expressway network is well-developed. Vehicles are prohibited from entering the core area of the ancient city during daytime and must be parked in peripheral parking lots (e.g., Nanmen, Cangshanmen, etc.).

Best Time to Visit
Dali is always spring-like, but the best time to visit is in spring and autumn.
-Spring and Autumn Golden Season (March-May, September-November): The most pleasant climate and crystal-clear skies. Spring offers seas of flowers, while autumn features high skies and light clouds, making it the perfect time for photography and outdoor activities.
-Summer (June-August): The rainy season with cool weather, making it a popular summer retreat. Rainfall is mostly in the form of showers, often followed by rainbows, and the air is fresh. However, it is advisable to bring rain gear.
-Winter (December to February): The dry season features abundant sunshine, warm daytime temperatures, and cooler mornings and evenings. It is an ideal time to escape the cold and admire the snow-covered scenery of Cangshan Mountain, with relatively fewer tourists.

Accommodation Options
-Inside the ancient city (preferred for convenience and lively atmosphere):
1. Characteristic Courtyard Inns: These inns are converted from Bai ethnic traditional dwellings, featuring exquisite courtyards and a strong ambiance, with excellent convenience for dining, drinking, sightseeing, and entertainment. However, some inns may be slightly noisy due to their street-facing location.
2. Premium boutique hotels: These offer superior facilities and services, typically nestled in the quieter lanes of historic towns.
-Along the Yuhai River (with stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere):
Seaview inns in Caicun, Longkan Wharf, Majiuyi and other locations offer breathtaking views of Erhai Lake right outside the window, making them perfect for vacations. However, they come with higher prices and are located some distance from the ancient town (typically 2-5 kilometers away).

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York.
