Q & A

Will I get altitude sickness at Shangri-La or on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain?
Possibly mild, rarely serious. Shangri-La sits around 3,200 meters, and the cable-car top on Jade Dragon reaches about 4,506, where most people feel breathless. Because this route climbs gradually, most guests adjust well; oxygen cans cost roughly 20–40 yuan and help with headaches. Our advice: walk slowly, drink plenty of water, and skip alcohol on the first evening. If symptoms turn severe, we descend immediately.
Is the 7-day pace realistic, or will we spend too much time driving?
Realistic, if you accept that transfer days are part of the scenery. Kunming to Dali takes about 4.5 hours by car, Dali to Lijiang around 2.5, and Lijiang to Shangri-La about 3.5–4, so plan for one main attraction plus travel each day. Our private car makes those hours comfortable, with photo stops and no luggage handling. An Australian couple we hosted called the drives the best part.
How do tickets work across the trip? Do we need to book in advance?
We book the major tickets for you, but here is the landscape: Stone Forest around 130 yuan, Jade Dragon admission about 100 plus the cable car about 140, Songzanlin roughly 90 including shuttle, and Pudacuo a park ticket plus mandatory bus. Most are real-name, so your passport must match the booking. Peak-season weekends and holidays can sell out, so advance booking genuinely matters.
How much walking is involved? Is it suitable for parents or young kids?
Mostly gentle, with a few honest exceptions. Stone Forest involves stairs and narrow passages, Lijiang and Dali are cobbled, and Songzanlin has about 146 steps at 3,380 meters, so pace yourself. Pudacuo's wooden boardwalk is flat and easy. We adjust walking distance to your group; a 74-year-old guest from Chicago joined our Erhai stroll without problems. Tell us your limits and we will plan around them.
What will we eat? Are there options for vegetarians or picky eaters?
Yunnan's food is a highlight on its own: cross-bridge rice noodles in Kunming, Bai cheese and Xizhou baba in Dali, Naxi grilled fish in Lijiang, and Tibetan yak hotpot with butter tea in Shangri-La. Wild mushroom hotpot is superb but seasonal, so we only use reputable restaurants. Vegetarians are well covered, and we communicate allergies and spice levels for you. English menus are inconsistent, but our guide orders.
