People come to Gexian Village for two distinct but complementary experiences: the serenity of Taoist mountain culture by day, and the sensory overload of immersive nighttime spectacle after dark.
By Day: The Taoist Mountain Village Experience
During daylight hours, Gexian Village is a place of quiet beauty. Visitors wander along cobblestone paths lined with traditional Jiangnan-style architecture—white walls, black tiles, wooden balconies, and bamboo groves. The air carries the scent of incense from the village's cultural pavilions. Key daytime attractions include the Zhongmiao Pavilion, the spiritual heart of the village where ancient-costume performances take place around 4:00 PM; the Yuanfang Flying Waterfall; and the Tianjing Terrace offering panoramic mountain views.
Many visitors also take the cable car up Gexian Mountain itself. The 10-minute ride lifts you through bamboo forests and misty valleys to the summit, where the Ge Xuan Temple and other Taoist shrines have drawn pilgrims for nearly two millennia. On clear days, the view from the top stretches across the Wuyi Mountain range. On misty days, you are walking through clouds.
By Night: The Immersive Light and Performance Spectacle
This is what transforms Gexian Village from a beautiful resort into an unforgettable destination. As darkness falls, the village becomes a stage. The evening program typically runs from approximately 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM (schedules may vary by season—check current listings before your visit).
The highlight is the large-scale water screen movie Xiu Xin Gui Zhen Ji, projected onto a curtain of water at the Wuhoyouju Water Dance Stage at 7:15 PM. This 20-minute show tells the story of Ge Xuan's spiritual journey through a fusion of water jets, laser lights, and digital projection. At 7:00 PM, the Zhongmiao Pavilion hosts its signature light show, bathing the pagoda in shifting colors and patterns. The evening culminates with a bonfire dance party at the Ancestral Hall Square starting at 7:35 PM, where performers in traditional costume lead visitors in circle dances under the stars.
The village also offers Hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) rental services, allowing visitors to stroll lantern-lit streets dressed as scholars or noblewomen from centuries past. This is not just a photo opportunity—it is a genuine immersion into the aesthetic world the village seeks to recreate.
Note: Most daytime performances are suspended on Tuesdays, though the evening light show and water screen movie still run. Always check the current schedule before planning your visit.
