Garden Creation - The nearby mountains and forests of Yu Garden
The "natural" essence of the City God Temple Scenic Area is condensed in its adjacent "urban mountain forest" - the Yu Garden.
The soul of Yu Garden: This classical private garden, built in the Ming Dynasty, despite being located in a bustling area, has created an endless charm of twists and turns and the interplay of mountains and water on just over thirty mu of land through its exquisite layout. The Grand rockery is the largest existing yellow stone rockery in the Jiangnan region, with a majestic and imposing presence. Yulinglong is one of the three famous stones in the Jiangnan region, renowned for its "wrinkled, perforated, thin and transparent" features. Wandering among the flower walls, corridors and pavilions, with each step revealing a new scene, it is an excellent classroom for understanding Chinese garden art and the ideals of ancient scholars.
The Nine-Bend Bridge, spanning the lotus pond, is a symbol of the City God Temple area. The bridge is full of twists and turns, which not only extends the visiting path but also, in feng shui, there is a saying that "a curved bridge gathers energy while a straight one provokes evil." Leaning on the railing to watch the fish, seeing the koi in the pond turn red, and the reflection of the pavilions in the water creating a charming contrast, is the best spot to experience the dynamic beauty of Jiangnan gardens.
Humanistic Craftsmanship - A Living Museum from Palaces to streets
The City God Temple complex itself is a living museum that showcases Taoist culture, architectural art and commercial civilization.
The main hall complex of the City God Temple: The main buildings are spread out along the central axis, including the mountain gate, the ceremonial gate, the main hall (City God Hall), the sleeping quarters, etc. The architectural style retains the layout of the Ming Dynasty, with upturned eaves and corners, carved beams and painted pillars, presenting a solemn and dignified atmosphere. The golden statue of the City God Qin Yubo enshrined in the main hall and the "Twenty-Four Departments" murals depicting scenes of hell both carry the traditional function of promoting virtue and educating people.
- The Hall of Time-honored brands with golden signs:
- Green Wave Corridor: Renowned for its exquisite boat pastries, it has entertained many political leaders from various countries. Its eyebrow pastries and gourd pastries are considered masterpieces of pastry art.
- Shanghai Old Restaurant: The pioneer of local cuisine, the Eight-Treasure Duck, Oil-Fried Shrimp and grass-head Circle are classics among classics, and it is the best choice to taste the authentic Shanghai flavor.
Nanxiang Steamed Bun Shop: There is always a long queue in front of it. Its crab roe steamed buns are thin-skinned, richly filled, juicy and fresh, and are a well-known Shanghai snack both at home and abroad.
Tong Han Chun Tang Chinese Medicine Store: A century-old Chinese medicine store established in the Qing Dynasty, with its ancient and elegant architecture and rich medicinal aroma, bears witness to the inheritance of traditional Chinese medicine culture here.
- Fumin Commercial Street and Handicraft World: Represented by Fuyou Road Small Commodity Market and the surrounding streets and alleys, this is a paradise for finding traditional handicrafts and unique trinkets. Paper-cutting, dough figurines, pear syrup candy, Chinese knots, the four treasures of the study... The dazzling array showcases the vigorous vitality of folk crafts and also serves as a marketplace stage for experiencing the joy of bargaining.
