The Source of Deities - From Huo Guang to Qin Yubo
The uniqueness of the Shanghai City God Temple lies in the fact that it enshrines "Three City Gods in one temple". Its predecessor can be traced back to the "Jinshan Temple" built by King Sun Hao of Wu during The Three Kingdoms period to worship the famous Han Dynasty general Huo Guang. Therefore, Huo Guang is revered as the "guardian deity" of the first hall. During the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (early 15th century), Zhang Shouyue, the magistrate of Shanghai, transformed the Jinshan Temple into a City God Temple and officially enshrined the local City God of Shanghai - Qin Yubo. Qin Yubo was a prominent scholar in Shanghai at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. Due to his integrity in office and his protection of his fellow villagers, he was enfeoffed as the City God of Shanghai by Zhu Yuanzhang and became the city's guardian deity. In addition, during the Qing Dynasty, Chen Huacheng, a famous anti-British general, was also enshrined, jointly forming the wonder of "Three City Gods in One temple", which also reflects the accumulation of local history and beliefs in Shanghai layer by layer.

The Road to Rise and Fall: The Evolution from Temple Markets to Business Districts
The history of the City God Temple is a microcosm of the commercial civilization and the development of citizens' lives in Shanghai.
The Rise of temple fairs and the budding of commerce (during the Ming and Qing Dynasties) : Since the temple was built, this place has been the center of faith for the people of Shanghai. During festivals and the birthdays of deities, grand temple fairs attract people from all directions, and the incense smoke is abundant. Merchants and artisans naturally gathered, forming a primary market centered around temples, namely the "temple market", which laid the foundation for its commercial genes.
The traditional fortresses in the "Ten-Mile Foreign Trade Center" (after its opening as a port in 1843) : With the opening of Shanghai as a port, Western influences spread eastward, and the Bund and Nanjing Road rapidly rose to become modern commercial centers. However, the City God Temple and the adjacent Yu Garden area, as the core of the old city, still tenaciously preserve the traditional Chinese market style, lifestyle and commercial form, becoming a unique and vibrant local cultural space in the collision of Chinese and Western cultures.
- Rising from the Ashes and Becoming a Tourist Landmark (1990s to present) : Throughout history, the City God Temple has suffered from numerous fires and wars. In the 1990s, Shanghai carried out a large-scale restoration and renovation of the Yuyuan business district. On the basis of protecting its historical features, it systematically introduced numerous time-honored Chinese brands, characteristic stores and local delicacies, successfully transforming it into a national intangible cultural heritage landmark scenic area integrating religion, culture, tourism, shopping and dining. Every year, it attracts tens of millions of domestic and foreign tourists.

Garden Creation - The nearby mountains and forests of Yu Garden
The "natural" essence of the City God Temple Scenic Area is condensed in its adjacent "urban mountain forest" - the Yu Garden.
The soul of Yu Garden: This classical private garden, built in the Ming Dynasty, despite being located in a bustling area, has created an endless charm of twists and turns and the interplay of mountains and water on just over thirty mu of land through its exquisite layout. The Grand rockery is the largest existing yellow stone rockery in the Jiangnan region, with a majestic and imposing presence. Yulinglong is one of the three famous stones in the Jiangnan region, renowned for its "wrinkled, perforated, thin and transparent" features. Wandering among the flower walls, corridors and pavilions, with each step revealing a new scene, it is an excellent classroom for understanding Chinese garden art and the ideals of ancient scholars.
The Nine-Bend Bridge, spanning the lotus pond, is a symbol of the City God Temple area. The bridge is full of twists and turns, which not only extends the visiting path but also, in feng shui, there is a saying that "a curved bridge gathers energy while a straight one provokes evil." Leaning on the railing to watch the fish, seeing the koi in the pond turn red, and the reflection of the pavilions in the water creating a charming contrast, is the best spot to experience the dynamic beauty of Jiangnan gardens.

Humanistic Craftsmanship - A Living Museum from Palaces to streets
The City God Temple complex itself is a living museum that showcases Taoist culture, architectural art and commercial civilization.
The main hall complex of the City God Temple: The main buildings are spread out along the central axis, including the mountain gate, the ceremonial gate, the main hall (City God Hall), the sleeping quarters, etc. The architectural style retains the layout of the Ming Dynasty, with upturned eaves and corners, carved beams and painted pillars, presenting a solemn and dignified atmosphere. The golden statue of the City God Qin Yubo enshrined in the main hall and the "Twenty-Four Departments" murals depicting scenes of hell both carry the traditional function of promoting virtue and educating people.
- The Hall of Time-honored brands with golden signs:
- Green Wave Corridor: Renowned for its exquisite boat pastries, it has entertained many political leaders from various countries. Its eyebrow pastries and gourd pastries are considered masterpieces of pastry art.
- Shanghai Old Restaurant: The pioneer of local cuisine, the Eight-Treasure Duck, Oil-Fried Shrimp and grass-head Circle are classics among classics, and it is the best choice to taste the authentic Shanghai flavor.
Nanxiang Steamed Bun Shop: There is always a long queue in front of it. Its crab roe steamed buns are thin-skinned, richly filled, juicy and fresh, and are a well-known Shanghai snack both at home and abroad.
Tong Han Chun Tang Chinese Medicine Store: A century-old Chinese medicine store established in the Qing Dynasty, with its ancient and elegant architecture and rich medicinal aroma, bears witness to the inheritance of traditional Chinese medicine culture here.
- Fumin Commercial Street and Handicraft World: Represented by Fuyou Road Small Commodity Market and the surrounding streets and alleys, this is a paradise for finding traditional handicrafts and unique trinkets. Paper-cutting, dough figurines, pear syrup candy, Chinese knots, the four treasures of the study... The dazzling array showcases the vigorous vitality of folk crafts and also serves as a marketplace stage for experiencing the joy of bargaining.

Photography Tips:
Classic panoramic shooting positions: By the window on the second floor of the Green Wave Corridor or in the middle of the Nine-Bend Bridge, you can capture the panoramic view of the water surface and the classical architectural complex of Yu Garden, especially when the lights are just turned on.
Architecture and Humanities Camera:
1. In front of the City God Temple: Take a close-up shot of the grandeur of the double-eaved hip roof and capture the devout moments of pilgrims entering and leaving.
2. In front of the corridor or the moon-shaped gate within the Yu Garden: Use frame composition to capture the beauty of the framed scenery in the garden.
3. Under the neon signs of the old street: Night shooting, combining ancient buildings with modern neon lights, showcases the charm of the Magic City where the old and the new blend.
Special Note: Taking photos of the deities inside the temple is usually prohibited. Please strictly abide by the regulations.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
