After breakfast, we will head to Yu Garden. It has a typical Jiangnan garden style, reflecting the artistic style of the southern gardens of the Ming and Qing dynasties, which is "quiet and beautiful, delicate and exquisite". The nearby Yu Garden Bazaar is a great place to sample local cuisine and explore traditional Chinese handicrafts.

The Yu Garden is within walking distance of the City God Temple. The City God Temple is not only a religious site, but also a lively commercial area. Inside the City God Temple, you can browse the market and taste local snacks.

Then you will head to the Bund, which is located on the banks of the Huangpu River in the Huangpu District of Shanghai and is famous for its 52 classical revival buildings of different styles, known as the ‘Expo of Universal Architecture’. Strolling along the Bund, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of both sides of the Huangpu River.

Next, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower is a 15-minute walk from the Bund. As one of the landmarks of Shanghai, it combines urban sightseeing, fashionable dining, shopping and entertainment. You can climb up to the observation lounge and have a magnificent view of the whole Shanghai.

I had a free day in Shanghai before a business trip and wasn't sure how to structure it. Ike suggested starting at Yu Garden and working east toward the Bund — that turned out to be the perfect sequence. Yu Garden felt like stepping into a different century with its rockeries, pavilions, and koi ponds. The City God Temple area was packed with energy; I grabbed some soup dumplings from a busy stall and they were incredible. Walking along the Bund later, I couldn't get over the contrast between the old colonial architecture and the futuristic Pudong skyline. The Oriental Pearl Tower gave me a view that made the whole city click. A full day but absolutely worth it.

I had read about the Bund's architecture but seeing it in person was something else. The collection of Art Deco, neoclassical and Gothic buildings is extraordinary — I spent a good hour just walking slowly and looking up. Yu Garden was charming but very crowded; I preferred the quiet corners near the rockeries. The City God Temple market was interesting but a bit too commercial for my taste. The highlight was the view from the Oriental Pearl Tower at sunset — the whole city laid out below, lights beginning to twinkle. I'd have liked more time on the Bund itself, but overall a well-executed day.

I came to Shanghai mainly for the food, and this walk did not disappoint. Started at Yu Garden Bazaar where I had shengjianbao from a tiny stall — juicy and worth the queue. The City God Temple was lively, more market than temple, but I loved the mix of incense and snack smells. The Bund was beautiful but crowded; I preferred the Oriental Pearl Tower — the revolving restaurant was a fun way to have dinner and watch the lights come on across Pudong. A bit touristy but I enjoyed it. Only wish I'd had time for the French Concession.

We had one full day in Shanghai before flying to Beijing with our two teenagers. Ike helped us plan a route that wouldn't exhaust them — starting at Yu Garden was smart because the kids actually enjoyed the maze-like paths and the ornate buildings. The market near City God Temple had so many interesting snacks we ended up having lunch there instead of a restaurant. The Bund was a bit of a walk but the view across the river kept everyone interested, and the girls loved taking photos of the old buildings against the modern skyline. The Oriental Pearl Tower was the big hit — the glass floor on the observation deck got some great shots and they spent ages pointing out landmarks. Only complaint: it was incredibly hot and humid in July. Bring water and a fan. A solid day covering the must-sees without making it feel like a forced march.

I wanted a photography-focused day in Shanghai and this itinerary gave me plenty of material. Yu Garden in the morning light was perfect for detail shots of the lattice windows and upturned eaves. The City God Temple area was a sensory overload in the best way — I had a great bowl of noodles at a hole-in-the-wall place near the market. The Bund was predictably beautiful; I spent most of my time shooting the Pudong skyline through the bare winter trees. The Oriental Pearl Tower observation deck was useful for high-angle shots, though reflections in the glass can be tricky. No guide needed — I followed the suggested route on my own and it worked perfectly. Very satisfying day.
