Origin: From a military pass to a major commercial town

Furong Ancient Town

At the very beginning - a military fortress that "determined the distance by military might"
The history of the establishment of Zhenyuan began with the military expansion in the Han Dynasty. Its name "Zhenyuan" means "guarding the distant place", highlighting its status as a bridgehead for the central government's governance of the southwestern frontier. In the sixth year of the Baoyou era of the Song Dynasty (1258), the imperial court built a "Zhenyuan Prefecture" earthen city here, making the military system more explicit.
However, what truly pushed Zhenyuan to the center stage of history was its irreplaceable geographical location. The Wuyang River connects the Yuan River, Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River, and is a natural waterway that runs deep into Guizhou and Yunnan. The land route was the throat of the post road leading from Hunan to Guizhou. This situation of "occupying the upper reaches of the Yuan River and serving as the key passage between Yunnan and Guizhou" made it a military and transportation hub where "to reach Yunnan and Guizhou, one must first defend the distant regions". During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, the imperial court established prefectures and guards here, stationed troops for reclamation, and built city walls, laying the foundation for a unique pattern of "prefectures and guards in the same city and military and political integration".

Prosperity and Splendor - The commercial legend of "A major metropolis in Southwest China"
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, with the advancement of the "reform of native chieftain system" policy and the further development of the southwest region, Zhenyuan rapidly transformed from a military stronghold into a commercial giant. Merchants from all over the country (especially those from Jiangxi, Hunan and Fujian) gathered here along waterways, established guild halls and engaged in the trade of bulk commodities such as wood, tung oil, medicinal materials and fabrics.
For a time, the Wuyang River was bustling with boats and merchants, and the docks and warehouses along the riverbank were lined up closely. The eight major guild halls in the city (such as the Wanshou Palace of the Jiangxi Guild Hall and the Tianhou Palace of the Fujian Guild Hall) were bustling with incense offerings. Here, diverse cultures blend: the Han people's guild hall culture coexists with the indigenous cultures of ethnic minorities such as the Miao and Dong. Confucian academies coexist with Taoist temples, Buddhist monasteries and mosques in the same city. Zhenyuan thus became a "major metropolis in Southwest China" where wealth and culture coexisted. Its prosperity lasted for hundreds of years and still leaves a deep impression in the ancient streets and alleys as well as the ancient buildings.

Must-see wonder: The symphony of mountains, waters, architecture and streets

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The Natural scroll - The Taiji pattern painted by the Wuyang River
The soul of the ancient city stems from a meandering Wuyang River.
- The Supreme Landscape: Standing on the highest point of the ancient city, Shiping Mountain, a breathtaking natural picture unfolds before your eyes: the emerald green Wuyang River flows through the city in a graceful "S" arc. The prefectural city on the north bank and the guard city on the south bank are like the Yin and Yang points in the Taiji diagram, surrounded by mountains on all sides. This naturally formed "Taiji Ancient Town" layout is the ultimate embodiment of the "harmony between man and nature" philosophy in the site selection of ancient cities in China, and it is also a unique visual symbol of Zhenyuan.
The Wuyang River Scenic Belt: Along both banks of the river are the essence of the ancient city. The pedestrian streets on the north bank (Xinglong Street and Shuncheng Street) face the bar street on the south bank across the river. During the day, take a small boat and float slowly on the river, watching the Ming and Qing style stilt houses, docks and ancient Bridges unfold one after another on both banks, as if walking through a water gallery. At night, the lights of the buildings and mountains on both banks come on one after another, reflected in the ink-black river, creating a dazzling and breathtakingly beautiful scene.

Architectural Code - The Architectural Wonder Born against the Cliff and the Imprint of Diverse Cultures
The Ancient architectural complex of Qinglong Cave: This is a wonder in the history of ancient architecture in Zhenyuan and even in China. It is not a cave but a vast cliffside architectural complex that was first built in the Ming Dynasty and integrates Confucian, Buddhist, Taoist, guild hall and post road buildings. Dozens of pavilions, palaces and terraces are perched high above the sheer cliffs of Zhonghe Mountain, blending seamlessly with the rocks, caves, ancient trees and wisteria, resembling an "aerial palace". Among them, there is the Ziyang Cave dedicated to Taoist immortals, temples dedicated to Buddha, and the Wanshou Palace built by Jiangxi merchants. These are the most direct and awe-inspiring physical symbols of the coexistence of diverse cultures in Zhenyuan.
The ancient residences of the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the "unorthodox ways" : There are a large number of quadrangle courtyards from the Ming and Qing Dynasties preserved in the ancient city, such as the Fu Family Courtyard and the Family Courtyard. Their distinctive feature lies in the "crooked path" - the street-facing gate is not opposite the main entrance of the courtyard, but is deliberately located in a side alley and tilted. This not only adheres to the feng shui principle of "not showing off wealth", but also reflects the merchant's low-key, reserved and defensive mindset.
Zhusheng Bridge and Ancient Alleyways: Zhusheng Bridge (also known as "Old Bridge"), spanning the Wuyang River, is the main passage connecting the two cities of Fuwei. It is a seven-arch bluestone bridge with a Kuixing Pavilion built on it, which is simple and heavy. The alleys of the ancient city (such as Sifangjing Lane and Renshou Lane) follow the terrain of the mountains, winding and twisting. The bluestone paths have been worn shiny by the passage of time, with high walls standing on both sides. They are quiet and profound, serving as the thread for exploring the hidden past of the ancient city.

Photography Secrets:
The best spot for a panoramic view of Tai Chi is at the viewing pavilion on Shiping Mountain. It takes about 30 minutes to walk up the mountain. The best light and shadow are at sunrise or sunset.
Zhusheng Bridge is a classic spot for capturing the panoramic view of the ancient buildings in Qinglong Cave and their reflections in the water, especially when the street lamps are just turned on.
In the early morning of the ancient alleyway, the slanting sunlight casts dappled shadows, making it an ideal location for capturing images of humanistic and architectural imagery.
Drones (within the permitted flight area) can capture breathtaking panoramic views of Taiji Ancient Town and the perilous and strange architecture of Qinglong Cave.

Core Experience: An immersive guide to Ancient town life

Five must-do things to unlock a Complete Ancient City Tour
1. Climb Shiping Mountain to overlook the entire Taiji Ancient Town: This is a must-do when visiting Zhenyuan. When the huge Taiji diagram composed of the entire ancient city, the river and the distant mountains unfolds beneath your feet, you will be deeply impressed by the wonders of nature and the ingenious adaptation of human beings.
2. Explore the Green Dragon Cave and read a three-dimensional cultural encyclopedia: Spend two hours wandering among the pavilions and palaces of the Green Dragon Cave. Touch the pillars that blend seamlessly with the mountain rocks, look up at the elaborately carved window lattices, and feel the wonderful atmosphere where different religions and cultures coexist in harmony here.
3. Night cruise on the Wuyang River for a feast of light and shadow: When night falls, be sure to take a stroll along the river or take a night cruise by boat. Looking at the lights on both banks, it's like a starry river pouring down. The Green Dragon Cave is like a fairyland suspended in the night sky, and the Zhusheng Bridge is like a rainbow lying on the water. This is a dreamy scene that cannot be seen during the day.
4. Take a detour through a "crooked path" and search for a story of a deep residence: Randomly turn into a small alley and look for those "crooked paths". Try knocking on a slightly awed door of an old residence (such as the Fu Family Courtyard which has been opened as a visiting spot), listen to the old residents talk about the past of the residence, and feel the warmth that time has accumulated here.
5. Taste a pot of sour fish soup and savor a flavor of the aroma of eastern Guizhou
Must-order delicacies: Zhenyuan Sour Soup Fish (red sour soup or white sour soup), Braised Pork in a dish, Tofu Pudding Grilled Fish, Glutinous Rice Cakes.
- Snack Flavors: Tofu pudding, rice tofu, and fried fern cakes found in every street corner. It is particularly pleasant to enjoy delicious food along the riverside bar street or at the food stalls at night, accompanied by the river breeze.

Travel Guide: Transportation, Accommodation and Seasons

Furong Ancient Town

How to Get There: A Seamless Connection Guide
Zhenyuan enjoys convenient transportation, and the train is the main way to get there.
- Train (most recommended) : At Zhenyuan Station, there are regular-speed trains and some bullet trains coming from Guiyang, Kaili, Yuping, Huaihua, Changsha and other places. The railway station is about 2 kilometers away from the ancient town. You can get there by taking a taxi at the starting fare.
- By bus: There are direct long-distance buses from Guiyang, Kaili, Tongren and other places.
- By car: Exit at Zhenyuan along the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway (G60) and navigate to the ancient city. Parking is inconvenient in some areas of the ancient city. It is recommended to inquire about the location of the inn's parking lot in advance.

Best visiting time
Zhenyuan has different scenery throughout the four seasons. It is cool in summer and is a great place to escape the summer heat.
The golden season of summer and autumn (May to October) : The climate is pleasant, the rivers are abundant, and the scenery is the best. In summer, you can play in water to escape the heat; in autumn, the sky is clear and the air is refreshing.
- Spring (March to April) : It rains a lot, but the ancient town in the misty rain has a unique charm.
- Winter (November to February) : It's damp and cold, with few tourists. The accommodation offers good value for money and allows you to experience the tranquility of the ancient town.

Accommodation options
- Both banks of the Wuyang River (top choice, with excellent views) :
Riverside View Inn/Hotel: Open the window and you'll be greeted by the Wuyang River and the scenery on the opposite bank. The night view is especially breathtaking. It is the core choice for experiencing the charm of Zhenyuan, but the price is relatively high during peak season and advance booking is required.
2. Characteristic homestays in the ancient city: Transformed from old houses, they are mostly located deep in ancient alleys, more secluded and rich in cultural atmosphere.
- Periphery of the ancient City (an economical and convenient option) :
Hotels in the new urban area: The facilities are relatively new, there are many choices, and the prices are reasonable. However, they lack the charm of the ancient city. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to walk to the core area.

IntoTravelChina Accommodation booking Tips: Riverfront rooms are highly sought after during holidays and summer weekends. Be sure to book at least 2-3 weeks in advance. By booking through us, you can ensure that you stay at a highly-rated and well-located inn and avoid the trouble of dragging your luggage while searching on the cobblestone roads. Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless.
