Origins: A Natural Wonder and Its Guardians

The Name "Caohai" – Poetic Beauty of Grasses Forming a Sea

The name "Caohai" literally means "Grass Sea," inspired by the lake's lush aquatic vegetation and dense reed beds. It is a typical highland karst freshwater lake, with an average depth of 2-3 meters. In local Yi ethnic lore, Caohai is a mirror dropped to earth by a celestial maiden, transforming into this shimmering sacred lake.

The Path of Guardianship – From Ecological Distress to Cranes Dancing in the Sky
Caohai's modern narrative is a poignant epic of moving from ecological damage to scientific protection:

Era of Damage (1950s-1970s): Large-scale drainage for farmland expansion drastically shrank the lake, severely damaging the wetland ecosystem and causing a sharp decline in rare birds like Black-necked Cranes.

Awakening and Rescue (1982-1992): The ecological alarm spurred action. The Caohai Nature Reserve was established in 1982 and elevated to a National Nature Reserve in 1992, focusing on protecting the highland wetland ecosystem and rare birds.

Ecological Restoration (2021-2025): Projects returning urban areas, villages, and farmland to the lake, coupled with pollution control, boosted aquatic vegetation coverage from 9% in 2021 to 66% by 2025, reviving the "Underwater Grassland." The nationally protected Ottelia acuminata (a plant sensitive to water purity), known as a "water quality monitor," now blooms in shallow bays, vividly proving the improved water quality.

Harmonious Coexistence (2023-Present): Ecological compensation mechanisms and a dedicated "bird cafeteria" covering over 1,300 hectares encourage local villagers to participate in conservation. Today, over 2,300 Black-necked Cranes—about one-fifth of the global population—winter at Caohai annually. The villagers' sentiment shifting from "fearing the birds' arrival" to "welcoming them" marks a profound change in the human-bird relationship, from conflict to symbiosis.

Nature's Artistry – A Lakeside Paradise and Bird Haven
The aesthetic core of Caohai lies in the ecological symphony woven by its waters, grasses, and birds.

Flowing Waters: The Breath of the Highland Pearl
Caohai is embraced by mountains at an altitude of approximately 2,200 meters. Its unique highland climate and topography create distinctive plateau lake scenery. Following sustained ecological efforts, aquatic vegetation now covers 66% of the lake bed, with submerged plants forming a dense "Underwater Grassland." At dawn, as the first sunlight touches the water, a light mist hovers, and Black-necked Cranes gracefully stroll along the shallows.

Kingdom of Migratory Birds: The Winter Home of Black-necked Cranes
From October to March each year, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds arrive. Caohai is home to 283 bird species, with over 100,000 waterfowl wintering here. The most precious is the nationally protected Black-necked Crane, the only crane species living on high plateaus. Their elegance is Caohai's most moving spectacle—crimson patches on their heads like rouge, black flight feathers spreading like velvet cloaks, long legs striding through shallow water with aristocratic poise. At dawn, flocks fly from roosts to feeding grounds in V-formations across the lake; at dusk, they return in groups, dancing in the sunset's glow.
Besides Black-necked Cranes, other nationally protected species like Common Cranes, Black Storks, Bar-headed Geese, and Ruddy Shelducks also inhabit the area. During the 2024-2025 winter, the total number of wintering birds exceeded 100,000.

The "Underwater Grassland" – A Green Miracle
The submerged aquatic plants form a dense "Underwater Grassland," covering 66% of the lakebed. The aquatic flora includes all four types: emergent, floating-leaved, free-floating, and submerged. The blooming of Ottelia acuminata in shallow bays serves as vivid testimony to the sustained water quality improvement. From viewing platforms, the clear water reveals swaying aquatic plants and fish swimming below.

Human Craftsmanship – Lakeside Ethnic Culture and Ecological Wisdom
For generations, Yi, Hui, Miao, and other ethnic groups have lived around Caohai, creating a culture in harmony with the wetland.

Yi Ethnic Charm – Lakeside Home Illuminated by Torches
The 24th day of the sixth lunar month marks the traditional Yi Torch Festival. Yi people in festive attire light torches by the lake, perform rituals, sing, and dance the Dati dance, expressing passionate fervor. Traditional Yi villages, such as Bandi Township near Caohai, offer experiences of the nationally intangible cultural heritage song and dance "A Xi Li Xi."

Culinary Delights – Highland Flavor Memories
Weining's cuisine carries the robust and savory tastes of the plateau:

Weining Ham: Comparable to Xuanwei ham, firm texture, richly savory.

Buckwheat Pastry: A Weining specialty, soft and sweet.

Caohai Small Fish: Tender flesh with no muddy taste.

Weining Xiaobaba, Mutton Soup, Pig's Feet Hot Pot: Beloved local everyday dishes.

Ecological Boardwalks and Birdwatching Platforms – Windows for Human-Nature Dialogue
The ecological boardwalk at Caohai North Slope Park is perfect for a leisurely, oxygen-rich stroll. Jiangjiawan Pier offers views of birds taking flight. Sitting quietly at a birdwatching platform at dawn or dusk, watching cranes dance and listening to birdsong, is a cleansing experience for the soul.

Photography & Observation Tips:
Prime birdwatching hours are 6:30-9:00 AM and 4:30-7:00 PM, when birds are most active and light is soft.
Bring a telephoto lens (400mm+), binoculars, and a tripod.
Observe quietly, wear dark clothing, and never chase or feed the birds.
Entry into the reserve's core water area is strictly prohibited; viewing is only from designated platforms and trails.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
