Origins: A Natural Wonder and Its Legends

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The Name "Baili Rhododendron" – Poetic Beauty Stretching for Miles
The name "Baili Rhododendron" derives from its vast coverage: the azalea forest belt forms a ring, stretching over 50 kilometers in length, 1 to 5 kilometers in width, covering a total area of 125.8 square kilometers. It is home to over 60 species of rhododendrons, encompassing all five subgenera found worldwide. From lower to higher altitudes, different colored azaleas bloom in succession, creating the unique phenomenon of "different flowers on one tree"—on a single rhododendron tree, flowers of scarlet, pink, lavender, yellow, and white can bloom simultaneously, with the most spectacular specimens displaying up to seven different colors.

Millennia-Old Legend – The Story of "Drunken Nine Oxen" and Lady Shexiang
In the Pudi Scenic Area, there is a famous spot called "Drunken Nine Oxen," whose name originates from a moving legend. According to historical records, in the 17th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1384 AD), Lady Shexiang, the chieftain of Shuixi, went to pay homage to the Hongwu Emperor to maintain peace in the southwestern borderlands. Among her tribute were nine sturdy oxen from Shuixi. However, when the procession reached this place, the nine oxen became enchanted by the brilliantly colored azaleas, refusing to move on amidst the flowers. After Lady Shexiang reported this to the emperor, he smiled and said, "Then let that place be called 'Drunken Nine Oxen.'" And so this poetic name has been passed down through the ages.

The Path of Guardianship – From Ecological Resource to World Garden
The modern story of Baili Rhododendron is a successful example of symbiosis between ecological protection and tourism development:

Ecological Treasure Trove (Pre-1980s): This vast native azalea forest long lay hidden deep in the Wumeng Mountains, protected for generations by the Yi, Miao, and other ethnic minorities, coexisting harmoniously with the forest.

Scientific Discovery and Protection (1980s-2000s): Forestry experts confirmed it as the world's largest and most species-rich native azalea forest. It was subsequently designated a National Forest Park and a National Nature Reserve.

Brand Takeoff (2010s-Present): In 2013, it was successfully certified as a National AAAAA-level Tourist Attraction. It has received over 20 honors, including "National Ecotourism Demonstration Zone" and "Asia · Greater China Top Ten Natural & Original Ecotourism Attractions." Adhering to the principles of "protection first, natural recovery as the main approach," Baili Rhododendron has forged a clear path of ecological priority and green development.

Nature's Artistry – The Breath and Pulse of the Rhododendron Kingdom
The natural landscape of Baili Rhododendron is an eternal dance of flowers, mountains, light, and shadow.

Flower-Covered Mountains: The Earth's Color Belt
Every year from late March to early May is the prime viewing season. During this time, rhododendons burst into bloom across the mountains. The red of the Rhododendron delavayi is like raging fire, the white of the Rhododendron irroratum like frost, the purple of the arboreum type like royal robes. All colors interweave, forming a magnificent, surging sea of flowers. Walking along the forest paths, your feet tread on soft fallen leaves, your head is shaded by dense clusters of blooms, the air is filled with a subtle fragrance, and a gentle breeze sends petals drifting down like a romantic flower shower.

Jinpo Ridge: Renowned for its vast expanses of fiery-red Rhododendron delavayi, contrasting vividly with the green forest—the most visually impactful area.

Pudi Scenic Area: Famous for its multicolored azaleas, where the "different flowers on one tree" phenomenon is most vividly displayed. Key attractions include Colorful Path, Drunken Nine Oxen, Shexiang Ridge, and Shuhua Peak.

Millennium Rhododendron King: At White Horse Slope, there stands a Rhododendron delavayi tree with a trunk diameter of 80.18 cm, a girth of approximately 258 cm, and a height of about 7 meters. Estimated to be over 1,270 years old, it blooms profusely every year and is truly the "King of Azaleas."

Jagged Rocks: A Fairytale of Karst Landforms
Baili Rhododendron lies in a typical karst development area. Besides the flower sea, there are numerous unique geological features:

Baili Rhododendron Prairie: Located 4 km from the central Pudi flower area, covering nearly 40 square kilometers, distributed in ring and terrace shapes. Due to the high-altitude climate and wind, the vegetation growth is unique, forming a distinctive natural bonsai garden. The prairie is dotted with sinkholes, offering high scenic value.

Millennium Kiss: Also called "Opposite Mouth Rock," formed by two rock faces that appear to be kissing. Legend has it they are the incarnations of two flower-growing maidens, complementing the surrounding azaleas.

Midi River: A tributary of the Wujiang River system. The 21.9-kilometer-long river, flanked by rocky banks, is lined not only with primeval rhododendron forests but also rare ancient trees like the millennium-old mulberry and imperially bestowed ginkgo.

Secret Green Realm: A Breathing Forest Oxygen Cabin
Baili Rhododendron boasts a forest coverage rate of 64.62%. It has no severe cold in winter and no intense heat in summer, with an average annual temperature of 11.8°C and an average summer temperature of 19°C. The average negative oxygen ion concentration exceeds 16,000 per cubic centimeter, making it an exceptionally favorable natural oxygen bar. The scenic area is filled with ancient trees, complemented by landscapes of mountains, waters, forests, and caves, and is home to rare birds and animals. It currently hosts over 100 bird species and 30 mammal species, including nationally protected animals like the clouded leopard, pangolin, and golden pheasant.

Human Craftsmanship – Ethnic Poetry Amidst the Flower Sea
Around Baili Rhododendron, 25 ethnic minorities, including Yi, Miao, Bai, and Manchu, have lived for generations. The Yi population accounts for 57.64% of the total ethnic minority population. Each ethnic group preserves its unique culture and customs.

Yi Ethnic Charm – Lakeside Home Illuminated by Torches
The 24th day of the sixth lunar month is the traditional Yi Torch Festival, the grandest ethnic celebration in Baili Rhododendron. In 2019, the Baili Rhododendron Torch Festival was successfully inscribed as a fifth batch provincial-level intangible cultural heritage item. During the festival, Yi people in festive attire light torches, hold sacrificial rites, sing, and dance. Visitors can experience the fiery passion of this "Oriental Carnival Night." Each year during the Torch Festival, Baili Rhododendron also hosts the "Wumeng Happy Song" square dance competition, with thousands of locals dancing in circles, allowing visitors to personally appreciate the unique charm of the ethnic culture.

Miao Ethnic Charm – Lusheng Love Songs on the Flower Slope
The Miao "Flower Jumping Festival" is another important ethnic celebration in Baili Rhododendron, usually held during the first lunar month. During this time, Miao people in festive attire play the lusheng and perform bench dances. Young men and women take this opportunity to meet and fall in love, continuing ancient courtship customs.

Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience – Living Cultural Transmission
Baili Rhododendron is rich in intangible cultural heritage, including the Yi "Flower God Worship," Miao embroidery, Yi yueqin playing, and Yi wine-fire therapy. At the intangible cultural heritage market in the Pudi Scenic Area, visitors can taste heritage foods like Maoxiangba and purchase heritage creative products like Yi embroidery. The large-scale Yi musical dance poem "Suoma Blossoms" has won municipal gold awards and has a profound cultural influence within and beyond the province.
