Furong Ancient Town

The name of Tian 'an - the gate of imperial authority and dignity
The name "Tian 'anmen" originated from its supreme status as the main entrance to the imperial city during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was first built in the 15th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1417), originally named "Chengtian Gate", symbolizing "receiving fortune from heaven and being entrusted with the mission of heaven". After its reconstruction in the eighth year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1651), it was renamed "Tian 'anmen", which not only means "receiving the mandate from heaven and governing the country and the people", but also fits the name of the "Heavenly Street" (Chang 'an Avenue) in front of it. For over 500 years of feudal history, Tiananmen Square and the enclosed imperial square in front of it were forbidden areas for the emperor to hold major ceremonies such as the "Golden Phoenix Issuing Edict", and ordinary people had no chance to step into them.

The Road to Rebirth - A national Symbol from Isolation to Openness
The modern transformation of Tiananmen Square is a microcosm of the historical changes in modern China:
- Modern Trends (1911-1949) : After the Xinhai Revolution, the square's walls were removed and it gradually opened to the public. It witnessed major events that influenced China's destiny, such as the May 4th Movement and the December 9th Movement, and became a gathering place for progressive ideas.
In the following ten years, the square underwent large-scale expansion and planning. Ten major buildings, including the Monument to the People's Heroes and the Great Hall of the People, were completed one after another, forming the grand layout it has today.
- National Heart (to this day) : Nowadays, it is the venue where the country holds the grandest ceremonies such as the National Day military parade and mass parades. The daily flag-raising ceremony is a solemn ceremony that unites the sense of national identity. The grand military parade on the Victory Day of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in 2015 and the 70th anniversary celebration of the National Day in 2019, among others, all demonstrated China's confidence and strength to the world here.

A humanistic monument - a frozen national epic
Every building on the square is not made of cold stone, but a monument carrying the national memory and political implications.

Tian 'anmen Rostrum: A historical viewing platform
- Visual core: This vermilion city tower with a double-eaved hip roof is a symbol of the square and even of China. The roof is covered with golden glazed tiles, and there are ten kissing beasts on the ridge, symbolizing the highest grade of imperial architecture. Standing on the city tower and looking down at the square, it was precisely the perspective that successive leaders of the Republic held during major celebrations. The interior of the building is now an exhibition hall, showcasing its architectural evolution and historical role. The best photography spot is near the memorial hall on the south side of the square, where you can capture the panoramic view of the city tower and the square.

Monument to the People's Heroes: The backbone of the nation
- Spiritual pillar: This is the largest monument in Chinese history. The eight giant reliefs on the pedestal condense the century-long revolutionary epic from the destruction of opium at Humen to the victory of the War of Liberation. It is located at the center point of the central axis of the square, reminding people of where today's national peace and prosperity come from.

- Temple of Faith: This square building is solemn and dignified, with 44 yellow granite columns from Fujian supporting the golden glazed double-eaved roof. This was a quiet and solemn experience. Countless people queued for hours with admiration, just for that brief moment of pause and gaze.

The Great Hall of the People and the National Museum: The Two Wings of Power
To the west of the square lies the Great Hall of the People, where the Grand Hall for ten thousand People, the State Banquet Hall and the provincial halls showcase the highest venues for state deliberation and reception. To the east is the National Museum of China. The basic exhibitions "Ancient China" and "The Road to Revival" are the most authoritative classrooms for understanding the five-thousand-year-old Chinese civilization and the history of modern struggle. Both buildings are grand in scale, and the colonnade design forms the magnificent boundary of the square.

Space and Nature - Ultimate scale and flowing scenery
The charm of the square also lies in its unparalleled physical space and the atmosphere that changes with the seasons and hours.

Grand Scale: The Heart-stirring "Emptiness"
- Spatial Aesthetics: Standing in the center of the 440,000-square-meter square, you will be enveloped by an unprecedented sense of openness. The ground is entirely paved with light-colored granite slabs, with no obstructions to the view. This ultimate "emptiness" precisely highlights the "fullness" and "heaviness" of the surrounding buildings, creating an emotional atmosphere of sublimity, solemnity and sanctity. The stroll along the central axis from the city tower to the monument is itself an experience full of ritualistic sense.

The flowing flag: The National Heartbeat Once a day
- Flag-raising and lowering ceremony: This is the most vibrant and must-see dynamic scene on the square. Every sunrise, 36 soldiers of the National Flag Guard cross the Jinshui Bridge and raise the Five-starred Red Flag to the top of the pole in the "March of the Volunteers". At sunset, it descends solemnly again. The time is accurate to the second depending on the season. Watching the flag-raising ceremony is not merely about observing a process; it is also about experiencing a national aesthetic that embodies belief, discipline and passion.

Festive finery: The changing expressions of the seasons
On ordinary days, the square is solemn. However, every National Day (October 1st), the square is decorated with giant theme flower beds, red lanterns and large flower and fruit baskets with the theme of "Blessing the Motherland", and is ablaze with lights at night. There are also corresponding arrangements for Labor Day (May 1st) and New Year's Day. In winter, the square looks even more solemn under the cover of snow. These seasonal decorations give the eternal national space a flowing festive expression.

Photography Tips: Flag-raising ceremony: Occupy the front row positions on the east or west side of the flagpole in advance to capture the classic moment when soldiers step out of the city tower and cross the Jinshui Bridge. High-sensitivity devices need to be used to deal with the morning light.
Architectural details: Take close-up shots of the door studs, dougong brackets, and kissing beasts of the city tower, or the colonnades and national emblem of the Great Hall of the People, and experience the beauty of architectural details.
The night view is splendid: Half an hour after sunset, during the blue hour, when the lights come on, it is an excellent opportunity to capture the light trails of the square and the cars on the streets of Chang 'an.

2. Walk along the national central axis once
This is a spiritual pilgrimage from modern remembrance to the origin of history.
3. Climb the Tiananmen Rostrum once

The scene before your eyes will truly enable you to understand the visual meaning of "having a broad mind for the world".
4. Visit a top museum

Travel Guide: Transportation, Accommodation and Seasons

Furong Ancient Town

How to Get There: A Dual Guide to Reservations and Transportation
To visit Tiananmen Square, making a successful reservation is the first step, and planning transportation reasonably is the second step.
- Core Prerequisite: Reservation: Individual visits must be made at least one day in advance through the official "Tiananmen Square Visit Reservation" mini-program with real names. Please be sure to bring your original valid identification document through the security check.
- Recommended mode of transportation:
- Subway (the most convenient) : Take Subway Line 1 to "Tian 'anmen East" Station or "Tian 'anmen West" Station and get off, or take Subway Line 2 to "Qianmen" Station and get off. Follow the instructions to pass through security and enter the square.
- Taxis/ride-hailing vehicles: Usually, they cannot pick up passengers at will on the main road of Chang 'an Avenue. You can get off near "Nanchizi Street" or "Qianmen East Road" and walk to the security checkpoint.
Important reminder: During holidays and around the flag-raising ceremony, the queue for security checks can be quite long. Please make sure to allow sufficient time (it is recommended to arrive at the security check area at least 60-90 minutes in advance).

Best visiting time
Tian 'anmen Square can be visited all year round, but the experiences vary in focus.
The golden seasons of spring and autumn (April to May, September to October) : The climate is the most pleasant, the sky is clear, and it is the best season for sightseeing and photography. Especially around the National Day, the square is decorated with huge flower beds, creating a strong festive atmosphere.
- Summer (June to August) : The weather is hot, but the time for watching the flag-raising ceremony is earlier (usually between 4:30 and 5:00). It is necessary to pay attention to heatstroke prevention and sun protection, and deal with the huge flow of tourists during the summer vacation.
- Winter (November to March) : The weather is cold, there are relatively fewer tourists, and the pressure of making reservations is small. The flag-raising ceremony is watched relatively late (usually around 7:00). The square after the snow is covered in a layer of white, solemn and serene, offering a unique experience.

Accommodation options
Tian 'anmen Square itself does not have accommodation facilities, but the surrounding area is the core area of accommodation in Beijing, with a wide range of choices that can be selected according to needs.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal!
