Anchang Ancient Town

Anchang Ancient Town

Historical Overview
Anchang’s history dates to 1012 when it was established as a market town. During the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), it became a regional commercial center, with merchants constructing grand residences and bridges. The town declined in the late Qing Dynasty but revived in the 1980s as a cultural tourism destination. Key revivals include the 1997 restoration of Ruili Hall (a merchant’s mansion) and the 2006 establishment of the China Sausage Museum. Today, over 300 families continue Traditional Crafts like soy sauce brewing and bamboo weaving.

Town Layout
Anchang follows a "one river, two streets, three bridges" layout:

  1. Xianheng River: The 2km-long canal with U-shaped stone locks, used for transporting goods.
  2. Main Street: A 500m cobblestone lane lined with shops, teahouses, and sausage workshops.
  3. Ancient Bridges: Notable spans include Fuyi Bridge (1573), Xianguang Bridge (1628), and Ruili Bridge (1702).
  4. Residential Zones: Ming-Qing era dwellings with courtyards, such as the Chen Family Ancestral Hall (1725).

Major Attractions

  1. China Sausage Museum: Traces the 1,000-year history of Anchang’s signature air-dried sausages, with live demonstrations.
  2. Ruili Hall: A 16th-century merchant’s mansion featuring carved wooden beams and a private theater.
  3. City God Temple: A Taoist temple rebuilt in 1725, hosting Festivals during the Lunar New Year.
  4. Ancient Bridges: Fuyi Bridge’s 12 arches and Xianguang Bridge’s lotus-shaped pillars.
  5. Stinky Tofu Street: A lane dedicated to Shaoxing’s pungent fermented tofu, sold in clay pots.

Cultural Highlights
Anchang is famed for its "Three Treasures": sausages, soy sauce, and Huangjiu (rice wine). Local customs include:

  • Waterfront Weddings: Brides arrive by boat, a tradition dating to the Ming Dynasty.
  • Sausage-Making: Families stuff pork casings in December, hanging thousands from eaves.
  • Bamboo Weaving: Artisans craft baskets and lanterns using techniques from the Qing Dynasty.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
