Three Gorges People Scenic Area

Three Gorges People Scenic Area

Nestled within the dramatic Xiling Gorge of the Yangtze River, the Three Gorges People Scenic Area is a living museum blending natural grandeur and Tujia ethnic heritage. Designated as China’s youngest 5A-level scenic area, it spans 14 square kilometers between the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam. The site preserves ancient fishing villages, geological wonders, and Ba-culture relics, offering a vivid portrait of life along one of the world’s greatest rivers.

Historical Overview
The area’s history dates to the Mid-Proterozoic Era, with its iconic stone formations shaped by tectonic movements over 1.5 billion years. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945), the Stone Tablet at Shipai Village became a strategic stronghold, where 100,000 Japanese troops were repelled in 1943. Post-1949, the region evolved from a fishing enclave to a cultural tourism hub, officially earning 5A status in 2011. Its stilted houses and folklore reflect centuries of Tujia adaptation to riverine life.

Structural Layout
The scenic area comprises three zones:

  1. Water Village: At the confluence of Longjin Stream and Yangtze, fishermen’s stilted houses and wooden boats evoke a bygone era of river-based livelihoods.
  2. Brookside Village: Semi-aquatic dwellings nestled in bamboo groves, where traditional laundry and Tujia songs create a pastoral ambiance.
  3. Mountaintop Village: Suspended wooden homes cling to cliffs, showcasing “rail-style” architecture unique to the Three Gorges’ steep terrain.

Key landmarks include the 4,300-ton Stone Tablet, the mushroom-shaped Shadow-Play Stone, and Dengying Cave, a 28-meter-deep karst formation.

Major Attractions

  1. Shadow-Play Stone: A 100-ton boulder balancing on a 200cm² base, dubbed “No.1 Stone of the Yangtze.”
  2. Stone Tablet: A 32-meter-high historical monument marking the 1943 Battle of Shipai.
  3. Tujia Folk Art: Paper-cutting, brocade weaving, and traditional dance performances.
  4. Crying Wedding Reenactment: A cultural showcase of Tujia matrilineal marriage customs.
  5. Moon Bay: The Yangtze’s “First Bay,” where the river bends 70 degrees, creating mirror-like reflections.
  6. Ba King Village: Recreated ancient dwellings with craft workshops and military-themed drift tours.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
