Jade Dragon Snow Mountain's cable car takes you to an altitude of about 4,506 meters (14,800 feet). The cable car ride itself is an experience — you ascend rapidly through changing vegetation zones. At the top, you can walk along wooden boardwalks to viewing platforms. The air is thin, and most visitors move slowly and take frequent breaks. Oxygen canisters are available for purchase at the base if you are concerned. You spend about 1–2 hours at the top before descending. The afternoon visit to Blue Moon Valley is at a much lower altitude and involves gentle walking along turquoise-colored terraced pools with the snow mountain as a backdrop — it is relaxing and requires minimal physical effort. If you prefer, you can skip the cable car and explore the lower areas instead.
This tour starts in Kunming but ends in Shangri-La. How does the departure work on Day 7?
The tour ends in Shangri-La, not Kunming, so your departure flight or train should be booked from Shangri-La (Diqing Shangri-La Airport or the railway station). On Day 7, you visit Pudacuo National Park in the morning, and after the visit, your driver transfers you to the Shangri-La airport or train station for your departure. Kunming is not revisited, which means you travel in a straight line across Yunnan rather than looping back. If you need to return to Kunming, you can book a connecting flight from Shangri-La to Kunming (about 1 hour), or take the high-speed train (about 4–5 hours). Your tour operator can help arrange this if needed.
Shangri-La is included in this tour — what makes it different from the other Yunnan cities on the itinerary?
Shangri-La (formerly Zhongdian) sits at an elevation of about 3,300 meters on the Tibetan Plateau, giving it a completely different atmosphere from Kunming, Dali, or Lijiang. The culture here is Tibetan, not Bai or Naxi — you will see Tibetan Buddhist prayer flags, stupas, and monasteries. The centerpiece is Songzanlin Temple, known as the "Small Potala Palace," a magnificent Tibetan Buddhist monastery with golden roofs set against a dramatic mountain backdrop. On the final day, you visit Pudacuo National Park, a pristine highland reserve with crystal-clear lakes, forests, and wildlife.
