Q & A

Wild Elephant Valley — will we actually see elephants, and when is the best shot?
Honestly, it is a probability game. Wild elephants are most reliably seen in the dry season, roughly November to February, with ranger-estimated odds around 60–70 per cent on early-morning visits; at other times it drops sharply. We arrive before opening, ride the cable car up, and walk the elevated boardwalk quietly. Even without a sighting, the rainforest walkway and elephant school shows carry the day.
The Tropical Botanical Garden is huge — how do we see it well in an afternoon?
Choose zones before you go. The West Zone holds the famous photo stops, Victoria water lilies, palm avenue, exotic flowers and dancing grass, and needs about three to four hours with the electric cart; the East Zone is pristine rainforest hiking, rewarding but tiring and better for fit walkers. For an afternoon, we do West Zone only and save your legs. Entry is about 80 yuan, carts extra.
Starlight Night Market and the floating market — are they the same thing?
Different layers of the same nightlife district in Gaozhuang. Starlight Night Market is the land-based sea of stalls beneath the Golden Pagoda, free to wander and best from around 6:30pm; the Six Kingdoms Floating Market is its canal section, where vendors work from small boats and you can buy a short ride. Both are commercial and tourist-facing, so browse, bargain gently, and pick busy food stalls.
What should we eat — Dai food for non-spicy eaters?
Think lemongrass grilled fish, pineapple rice, hand-grabbed rice and Lao iced coffee, with fried insects for the brave. Non-spicy eaters can still enjoy most dishes, and our guide orders "mild" where spice is a choice; vegetarians have fruit, sticky rice and grilled corn, though protein options are limited. Night-market stalls quote tourist prices, so agree costs before ordering and follow local queues.
When is the best season, and how hot is it really?
Dry season, November to April, is the comfortable window: mild days around 20–28 degrees, clear rivers and the best elephant odds, with April's Water Splashing Festival as the lively exception. May to October is hot and humid with frequent downpours, greener but wetter. Even in the dry season, evenings are cool enough for a light layer, and UV is strong all year.
