Your private day tour begins with a pickup from your Dali hotel. Your first stop is the charming Dali Ancient Town, where you can take a brief stroll through its historic gates and cobblestone streets, setting the tone for the day.

The journey around Erhai Lake officially begins as you drive north to Xizhou Old Town. Here, you'll delve into the Bai ethnic culture and have the opportunity to witness or even try the traditional Zhoucheng Tie-Dye craft, a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, at a local workshop.

Continuing along the lakeshore, you'll visit the picturesque Shuanglang Old Town, known for its serene views and artistic vibe. The route then passes through Wase Town before arriving at the tiny, tranquil Xiaoputuo Island, a Buddhist sanctuary perched on the lake.

The tour proceeds along the eastern shore, making a photo stop at the colorful Wenbi Village Rainbow Road. Later, ascend to the Mediterranean-inspired complex of The Dream Land (Dali) for panoramic views of Erhai Lake.

Finally, you'll complete the loop and return to Dali Ancient Town, where you can choose to be dropped off to further explore on your own or be taken directly back to your hotel, concluding a full day of scenic and cultural discovery.

Q & A

Is one day enough to circle Erhai Lake, or will it feel rushed?
One day is the right amount of time for a scenic loop by private car. The full circuit around Erhai Lake is roughly 120 kilometers, and with a private driver and guide, you'll cover the key stops comfortably in about 8–9 hours including pickup and drop-off. You'll visit Dali Ancient Town, Xizhou for the Bai tie-dye experience, Shuanglang Old Town, and several scenic viewpoints along the eastern shore — all without feeling like you're hurrying. What makes it work is that you're not walking the entire lake; you drive between stops and spend focused time at each one. If you wanted to cycle the lake (a popular option for independent travelers), that would take 2–3 days.
I've heard Dali is at a moderate altitude. Will the altitude affect me during this tour?
Dali Old Town sits at about 1,970 meters (6,460 feet) above sea level, and the Erhai Lake area is similar. This altitude is generally well-tolerated — most visitors don't experience altitude sickness here. You may notice you get slightly more winded when walking up stairs or inclines, but it's not comparable to higher destinations like Lijiang (2,400m) or especially Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (4,500m). Staying hydrated and avoiding heavy alcohol on your first night in Dali is sensible advice. If you're arriving directly from sea level, take it easy on the first day and you should feel fine.
I'm a photography enthusiast. Is this tour worth it for the photo opportunities?
Absolutely — Erhai Lake is one of the most photogenic locations in Yunnan. The tour stops at several spots that are specifically chosen for their visual appeal: the colorful Wenbi Village Rainbow Road with its painted walls and lake views, Shuanglang Old Town with its waterfront cafés and boats, the panoramic viewpoint at The Dream Land complex, and Xiaoputuo Island's tiny Buddhist temple on the lake. Late afternoon light on the eastern shore is particularly beautiful, with the sun casting warm tones across the water and the Cangshan Mountains in the background. Bring a wide-angle lens for the lake panoramas and a zoom lens for capturing detail shots of the Bai architecture and tie-dye patterns.
What's the best time of year to do this tour? Will the weather cooperate?
The best time is March to May and September to November. During these months, the weather is mild, rainfall is low, and visibility across the lake is at its best. Summer (June to August) is the rainy season in Yunnan — you can still do the tour, but you may encounter afternoon showers and hazy skies that obscure the mountain views. Winter (December to February) is dry but can be cold and windy on the lake, especially in the morning and evening. The landscape is still beautiful in winter, with snow occasionally capping the Cangshan Mountains. If possible, aim for autumn when the skies are clearest and the rice terraces in the area are golden.
