  • Zhangye Binggou Danxia Scenic Area - Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park

  • 4+stars Hotel

  • Breakfast

After breakfast, you will be driven for about one hour to the unique Benggou Danxia Landscape Scenic Area. If the Danxia of Linze is famous for its colorful, then the Benggou Danxia is more like a work of art carefully carved by nature, with her unparalleled dexterity, the mountains and rivers are shaped into a breathtaking spectacle - a magnificent palace standing tall, a long corridor stretching out sinuously, huge stone pillars rising up from the ground, with different shapes and forms, which attracts people's imagination. For the next two hours, you will take a leisurely stroll through this magical land and experience nature's artistry up close.

Then, you will head to Zhangye Danxia National Geopark, a wondrous landscape originating from the remote pre-Jurassic period, where thousands of peaks and peaks, like a brilliant palette of colors in the setting sun, stretch endlessly, draping the barren mountains in a gorgeous red dress. In order to capture this stunning beauty in all aspects, there are several viewing platforms in the park for you to stop and watch, and to freeze every wonderful moment. When the sun sets, the Rainbow Terrace is the perfect place to watch the sunset over the Danxia landscape. It is recommended that you arrive early to grab an excellent viewing position, so as not to miss the magnificent view of the setting sun coloring the sky and Danxia together.

  • Great Buddha Temple - Mati Temple

  • None

  • Breakfast

After breakfast, you will proceed to the prestigious Great Buddha Temple, famous for housing Asia's largest indoor sleeping Buddha. Built during the Western Xia Dynasty (1098 AD), this magnificent temple complex is not only admired for its opulent decorations, but even more precious for its well-preserved Buddhist scriptures and exquisite murals, a treasure of history and art. At the heart of the temple, a 34.5-meter-long giant sleeping Buddha lies in the center, showing the solemn scene of Buddha's nirvana with exquisite wood carving, and its ears are wide enough for four adults to sit side by side, demonstrating extraordinary artistic attainments and religious significance.

We then drive across about 65 kilometers to the historic Mati Temple. Mati Temple, is a monument that carries the deep cultural heritage of the Northern Liang period (397 to 460 AD). The core attraction, Puguang Temple, is like a bright pearl set on the craggy cliffs. Its uniqueness lies in the 21 staggered grottoes, standing proudly in the posture of a five-tiered pagoda, with each layer seeming to tell a thousand-year story. The outer walls of the temple bravely poke out over the edge of the cliff, creating a breathtaking illusion of standing in the air. Part of the area requires a hike up steep stone steps to reach the top of the temple, each step filled with admiration for the wisdom and perseverance of the ancients.

Grottoes outside the Qilian Mountains towering, November to June is silver, snow-capped in the sun shining with the holy light, for this land added a few points of mystery and magnificence.

Our journey comes to an end, the guide and driver will according to your schedule to send you to the station or airport, hope that this trip can leave you with good memories, look forward to meeting you again!

Q & A

This is a three-day tour based in Zhangye. Is it enough time to see both the Danxia landscapes and the temples?
Yes, three days is a comfortable fit for Zhangye. Day one is a relaxed arrival, day two is devoted to the Danxia landscapes — really the heart of this region — and day three pairs the Great Buddha Temple with the cliff grottoes at Mati Temple before your departure. It's a focused, well-paced route that lets you experience both the natural wonder and the historical treasure without feeling stretched. If you'd like a longer stay or an extra rest day, we're happy to extend it.
When is the best time to see the Danxia colors, and how do I get the most from the sunset at Rainbow Terrace?
The Danxia colors are most vivid in the soft light of the early morning and, above all, at sunset, when the low sun brings out the rich reds and oranges across the mountains. For the best experience, we recommend arriving at Rainbow Terrace a little early to claim a good viewing spot, then watching the setting sun color both the sky and the hills together. Late spring through autumn offers the clearest skies; the scene is beautiful in every season, but timing your visit to the golden hour makes the colors truly glow.
Zhangye is in the arid northwest. What's the weather like, and how should I pack?
Zhangye has a dry, continental climate with big temperature swings between day and night — warm and sunny during the day, but noticeably cooler once the sun goes down, especially in the desert parks. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant; summer days are hot but shade is scarce, and winter is cold with occasional snow on the distant mountains. Pack a small backpack with water, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a light jacket for the cooler evenings, and comfortable walking shoes. We'll send a season-specific packing note with your confirmation.
The region is dry and sunny. Any health tips for the high altitude and dry air?
A few simple habits make the trip more comfortable. The air is dry, so drink water regularly even if you don't feel thirsty, and keep lip balm and a small moisturizer handy. The sun is strong at this latitude, so wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Zhangye sits at a moderate elevation, and most travelers feel perfectly comfortable; if you're sensitive to altitude, take it easy on your first day and let your guide know. Staying hydrated and shaded is really the key.
The Mati Temple involves steep stone steps, and the Danxia parks involve walking. How strenuous is this tour?
It's a moderately active tour, and we'll always adapt to your pace. The Danxia parks offer several viewing platforms with short walks between them, so you can cover as much or as little as you like. Mati Temple is the more demanding part — reaching the top of Puguang Temple means climbing steep stone steps — but it's optional in effort: you can enjoy the grottoes and the cliff views from the lower levels if you prefer. Just tell us your comfort level, and your guide will tailor each stop accordingly.
