A Slower Side of Southern China: Rivers, Villages and Hands-On Craft
This is a good itinerary for travelers who want to combine Guangzhou’s city culture with Guilin’s landscapes and outdoor experiences. The bamboo rafting, cycling and wood carving activity add something more personal to an otherwise sightseeing-focused trip.
What I enjoyed about this trip was how easy it was to slow down. Guangzhou started with the energy of the city, from the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and Beijing Road to the Pearl River night cruise. Seeing Canton Tower lit up from the river gave me a very different perspective on Guangzhou compared with exploring the city streets during the day.
Guilin changed the pace completely. The Li River cruise was the highlight for me, with the karst mountains appearing around every bend. Rather than rushing from one viewpoint to another, I enjoyed simply staying on the boat and watching the landscape change.
The more hands-on part of the journey came with the wood carving experience. Sitting down and working with the material myself made a nice change from simply visiting historical sites. It also gave me a better appreciation for the time and patience involved in traditional handicrafts.
The following day was even more active. On the Yulong River, I took a bamboo raft through the karst scenery, then explored the Ten-Mile Gallery by bike. The combination of rafting and cycling made this one of the days when I felt most involved in the landscape rather than just looking at it.
By the end of the trip, Guilin’s slower rhythm felt quite different from Guangzhou’s busy streets. That contrast was probably what I enjoyed most.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic!
Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale.
For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
