A Taste of China Beyond the Famous Landmarks

This itinerary works well for travelers who want the classic China highlights but also want to experience local food, tea culture and traditional performances along the way. The cultural activities are what make the route feel more personal.

What stayed with me most from this trip wasn’t one particular landmark, but the small experiences between them. Beijing naturally started with the big ones: the Forbidden City, Tian’anmen Square and the Mutianyu Great Wall. Seeing the Great Wall from the cable car and then walking along it made the experience feel much more personal than simply viewing it from a distance.

In the Beijing hutongs, the pace became slower. I learned to make dumplings for lunch, which was one of those simple activities that made the traditional neighbourhood feel much more connected to everyday life. Xi’an continued the historical side of the trip with the Terracotta Warriors, but the city wall and evening visit to the Grand Tang Dynasty Ever Bright City gave me a different perspective on the city.

Chengdu was probably the biggest change in pace. The pandas were an obvious highlight, but I enjoyed sitting down for a gaiwan tea experience at People’s Park even more than I expected. Later, the Sichuan Opera face-changing performance offered another glimpse into local culture. These were the moments that made the itinerary feel less like a checklist of attractions.

Shanghai brought the journey back to a faster, more modern setting. Yuyuan Garden and the Bund showed two very different sides of the city, while the Shanghai World Financial Center gave me a completely different view from above. By the time I reached Tianzifang on the final sightseeing day, the contrast with Beijing felt quite striking.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly.
