Hunshandake Sandy Land

Hunshandake Sandy Land

Hunshandake Sandy Land

Historical Overview

  • Formation: Shaped over 30 million years by wind and water erosion, with sand dunes evolving under Quaternary glacial cycles.
  • Desertification Crisis: Between the 1990s–2000s, severe droughts and overgrazing caused mobile sand areas to expand 17-fold, threatening Beijing with frequent sandstorms.
  • Restoration: Since 2000, China’s “Return Farmland to Forest” project replanted 14.1 million mu of forests and 9.2 million mu of grasslands, reducing mobile sand by 4.47 million mu. Forest coverage rose from 7.2% (2000) to 23.35% (2023).

Structural Layout
The park is divided into three zones:

  1. Core Conservation: Protected dunes, wetlands, and Ulmus pumila woodlands (95% of the area’s trees).
  2. Eco-Tourism: Hiking trails, volcanic remnants (e.g., Pingdingshan Volcanoes), and lakes like No. 20 Maar.
  3. Cultural Experience: Nomadic ger camps, ancient grazing trails, and non-heritage workshops (e.g., milk tofu making).

Major Attractions

  1. Sparse Forest Grassland: A UNESO-recognized ecosystem where Ulmus pumila trees (10–25cm diameter) dot golden dunes, ideal for autumn photography.
  2. Pingdingshan Volcanoes: A 20-km² volcanic cluster with hexagonal basalt columns and crater lakes.
  3. No. 20 Maar: A turquoise crater lake formed by ancient eruptions, perfect for sunrise views.
  4. Ecological Restoration Demo Zone: “Chicken grazing” projects (2011–present) showing sustainable land use.
  5. Nomadic Ger Camps: Stay overnight in traditional yurts and ride Mongolian horses.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
