Historical Overview

Zhangbei’s history dates back to the Warring States Period (475–221 BCE), when it marked the northern frontier of agricultural states. The area gained strategic importance during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), when The Great Wall was reinforced to defend against Mongol incursions. Today, it retains 11.2 kilometers of well-preserved Ming-era walls and 37 beacon towers. In the 20th century, Zhangbei became a cultural hub, hosting the InMusic Festival (China’s “Glastonbury”) and attracting global attention through events like the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, which utilized nearby崇礼 (Chongli) for skiing venues.

Geographic Layout

The grassland is divided into three core zones:

1. Natural Scenic Area: Dominated by the Zhangbei Grassland Sky Road, a 132.7-kilometer scenic drive dubbed “China’s Route 66,” featuring wind turbines, meadows, and villages.
2. Cultural Heritage Zone: Includes the Wild Fox Ridge Military Fortress (a WWII-era Soviet-Mongolian alliance memorial) and Six Dynasties Great Wall Remnants.
3. Ecological Reserve: Protects wetlands like Shidian Lake and rare species such as the Mongolian gazelle.
   Key landmarks include Huapiling Peak (2,128 meters above sea level) and Bailong Cave, a karst cave with underground rivers.
