The name "OMG" is a deliberate marketing choice aimed at the young, social-media-driven traveller, but the landscape itself is ancient — the valley is underlain by a limestone cave system formed over roughly 300 million years, with an underground river that still flows year-round at a constant temperature of 18 degrees Celsius.

The park is divided into three distinct zones: the underground cave and boat tour at the valley floor; the mid-level adventure courses including the Sky Kart, Zipline Gliding, and Cloud Bridge; and the hilltop attractions accessed via the Glass Skywalk. The layout follows the natural topography — you start at the bottom, work upward, and exit at the top without retracing your steps. This design is more thoughtful than most Chinese adventure parks, where backtracking often cuts into the time available for activities.

Tonglu County itself has a long history — it has been continuously settled since the Qin Dynasty (221–207 BCE) and appears in classical texts for its scenic river valleys. The Baidu Baike entry for Tonglu County covers the area’s geography and its development into a tourism corridor serving the Hangzhou–Shanghai market.

The park’s signature attraction is the Tongtian River boat tour, which takes you through roughly one kilometre of navigable cave passage on a flat-bottomed electric boat. The cave ceiling rises and falls dramatically — in the entrance hall it soars to an estimated 30 metres, while in the middle section you instinctively duck even though the clearance is sufficient. The temperature drop from the summer heat outside is immediate and striking; the cave maintains a steady 18°C regardless of the season.

The boat ride lasts about 15 minutes. The cave is lit with coloured LED fixtures that pick out specific stalactite formations — operators have named them things like "Dragon's Pillar" and "Celestial Curtain." I found the lighting more restrained than at comparable show caves in Guangdong and Guangxi, which worked in the park’s favour: the formations were visible without being drowned in neon. The most impressive section is a narrow channel where the cave walls close in on both sides, leaving barely enough width for the boat to pass, while stalactites hang so low that you can reach up and touch them — though signs discourage it, and the boatman will call out a warning in Mandarin.

After the boat disembarks, a walking path continues through a second chamber with a walkway suspended above an underground stream. This section takes about ten minutes and ends at the base of the Sky Kart launch point.

After emerging from the cave, the park opens onto the mid-level adventure zone. The two headline rides here are the Sky Kart, a downhill go-kart track that winds through the forest for roughly 1.2 kilometres, and the Zipline Gliding, a single cable spanning the valley for about 400 metres.

I tried the Sky Kart on a Thursday afternoon in late May. The track is wider than most comparable karting courses in China — enough space for two karts side by side at several points — and the downhill gradient gives you genuine speed without requiring the rider to manage engine acceleration. Karts are fitted with a manual handbrake, and the operator briefs each rider individually before departure. The run takes about three to four minutes. It is not a race — the karts have speed governors, and overtaking is discouraged — but the sensation of descending through the forest canopy with the valley opening up ahead is genuinely enjoyable.

The Zipline Gliding, by contrast, is short and unremarkable. It takes roughly 30 seconds from launch to landing, the views are partially obstructed by the treeline on the approach side, and the queue on my Thursday visit was 25 minutes for a 30-second ride. If you have done ziplines before, you can skip this one without regret. The Cloud Bridge — a suspended rope bridge and net walkway about 80 metres above the valley floor — offers a longer, more engaging aerial experience for the same price bracket.

The park markets itself as a family destination, and the age range of visitors I observed on two visits — families with children aged roughly four to twelve, groups of young adults, and several couples in their sixties — suggests the mix works. The cave boat tour has no age restriction and is safe for children of any age who can sit through a 15-minute ride. The Sky Kart requires riders to be at least 1.2 metres tall; children below that height can ride as passengers with an adult. The Cloud Bridge and zipline have a 1.2-metre minimum as well.

The park is genuinely pet-friendly — dogs on leashes are permitted throughout the site, including on the cave boat tour, which is unusual for Chinese scenic areas. I saw a Golden Retriever and two small mixed-breed dogs during my May visit, all walking calmly with their owners on the pathways. Staff did not raise any objections. If you are travelling with a dog, bring a portable water bowl — the concrete paths retain heat in summer, and water stations are spaced irregularly.

One practical limitation: the Glass Skywalk and Cloud Bridge require visitors to wear fabric shoe covers provided at the entrance, which are available in children’s sizes but not designed for pets’ paws. You will need to carry your dog across these sections. Tonglu County sits at the midpoint of the Hangzhou–Qiandao Lake high-speed rail corridor. From Hangzhou East station, trains to Tonglu station take 30–45 minutes, with second-class tickets at approximately ¥60. From Shanghai Hongqiao, the journey is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to Tonglu, costing around ¥130. The official China Railway website (12306) handles bookings for both routes in English.

From Tonglu station, the park is about 20 kilometres southwest. A taxi or Didi takes roughly 30 minutes and costs ¥60–80. There is also a public bus (route K201) from Tonglu bus station to Yaolin town, which drops you about 1.5 kilometres from the park entrance — a 20-minute walk or a short taxi hop. The bus runs every 30 minutes and costs ¥5, but it does not run after 17:00.

Driving is straightforward. From Hangzhou, take the Changshen Expressway (G25) south to the Tonglu exit, then follow County Road X505 for about 15 minutes. Total driving time from Hangzhou city centre is about 1 hour 20 minutes. Parking at the park costs ¥10 per car. The China National Tourism Administration website lists Tonglu among the recommended weekend destinations for the Jiangsu–Zhejiang–Shanghai region.

The disappointment first: the park’s food options are limited and mediocre. There are two food courts near the mid-level plaza serving standard amusement-park fare — fried chicken, instant noodles, rice boxes at ¥38–58 per portion — and a small café near the exit. Nothing is notably bad, but nothing is good either. The nearest proper restaurant is in Yaolin town centre, a ten-minute drive away. Pack a lunch if you want a decent meal.

More significantly: the park was visibly crowded even on a Thursday in late May. The queue for the Sky Kart peaked at 40 minutes around 11:00, and the bottleneck at the cave boat entrance created a 20-minute wait in a narrow corridor with no seating. Weekends, based on online reviews, are considerably worse — reports suggest the Sky Kart queue can exceed 90 minutes on Saturday afternoons.

What surprised me positively: the cleanliness of the site. The restrooms in all three zones were well-maintained and stocked with toilet paper and hand soap, which is not a given at Chinese adventure parks. The pathways were swept regularly, and I saw staff cleaning the glass panels on the Skywalk between guest groups. The Google Maps location for Chuiyun Tongtian River has recent visitor photos and crowd-level reports that are worth checking before you set out.
