Located in the Bozidun Kyrgyz Ethnic Township, Wensu County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang, the Wensu Grand Canyon is a National AAAAA Scenic Area that integrates karst salt, Danxia, and Yadan landforms, earning the title "King of Canyons." This site, once traversed by Xuanzang during his journey to fetch Buddhist scriptures, features the Muzart Ancient Road and was first discovered by outdoor hikers in 2002. In 2016, it was designated a national-level scenic area, spanning 200 square kilometers.

The canyon comprises three main valleys and twelve tributary valleys, with the longest stretching 20 kilometers. Its folded rock layers, shaped by tectonic forces and weathering, create a tapestry of landscapes: red cliffs, salt-dome structures, Danxia rock walls, and Yadan formations. Iconic spots include "The Source of Life" (a phallic-shaped rock revered as the canyon's guardian) and the "Heaven-Asking Valley" (a narrow 2-meter-wide entrance expanding into a spacious path lined with "Lucky Stones" embedded in cliffs). Geologists hail it as China’s only "living geological museum" blending Danxia, Yadan, and karst salt landscapes, offering both scientific research and tourism value.

Best Season: September to November, when sunlight enhances the vibrant red hues of the rock formations. Arrive before noon to capture dramatic light shifts. Plan a 4–5-hour visit.
Transportation: Self-driving requires a 4WD vehicle due to gravel roads prone to sinking. Alternatively, take the armored shuttle bus (¥60/person) to Valley 4’s endpoint, then hike to Valley 3. For a 2-day South Xinjiang itinerary, combine with the Kucha Grand Mosque and Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves.
Tickets & Hours: Adult tickets start at ¥34; shuttle + ticket packages cost ¥94. Self-driving vehicles incur an additional ¥100 fee. Open 9:30 AM–8:00 PM (last entry 4:30 PM).

Wensu Grand Canyon not only echoes Xuanzang’s historical journey but also captivates with its "fierce horses and boundless aura"—a must-visit for geology enthusiasts, photographers, and adventurers. Every step here is a dialogue with Earth’s billion-year history, every glance a testament to nature’s artistry. Whether you seek geological insights, photographic masterpieces, or profound travel experiences, this "King of Canyons" delivers an unforgettable chapter in Xinjiang’s grandeur.
