Q & A

Zhangjiajie's Tianmen Mountain involves 999 steps and a glass skywalk. How challenging is it for someone who isn't a regular hiker?
You don't need to be a hiker. The 999 steps at Tianmen Mountain are the most physically demanding part of the entire tour, but you can take them at your own pace — most people pause halfway for photos and water. If the steps are too much, there's an escalator alternative that takes you most of the way down. The glass skywalk is short (about 60 meters) and optional; you can walk the solid path next to it if you prefer. The Bailong Elevator in Zhangjiajie National Forest does the climbing for you — you ride up 330 meters in a glass lift. On a typical day in Zhangjiajie, you'll walk about 10,000–12,000 steps with some stairs, but nothing extreme.
This tour covers Beijing, Xi'an, Chongqing, Zhangjiajie, and Shanghai — that's a very different mix from other multi-city tours. What kind of traveler is this best for?
This tour is ideal for travelers who want the complete China spectrum in one trip: ancient imperial history (Beijing and Xi'an), mind-blowing natural scenery (Zhangjiajie's Avatar mountains), raw urban culture (Chongqing's mountain-city quirks), and futuristic metropolitan energy (Shanghai). It's less about rural village life and more about dramatic contrasts — standing on the Great Wall in the morning and riding a cable car through a residential building in Chongqing a few days later. If you want to experience both China's ancient soul and its bold, modern edge in a single journey, this route delivers that balance better than any other.
The food on this tour varies enormously — from Beijing duck to Chongqing hotpot to Shanghai soup dumplings. Will I get help finding good places to eat?
Yes — your guide will recommend authentic local restaurants and street food spots in each city. Breakfast is included at your hotel daily. For other meals, your guide can point you to the right places based on your preferences and budget. In Beijing, the focus is on duck and noodle dishes. In Xi'an, the Muslim Quarter is a street food paradise — your guide will show you the stalls for lamb skewers, biangbiang noodles, and persimmon cakes. In Chongqing, hotpot is the must-try, and your guide can help you choose a place with a split pot (mild broth on one side) if you're nervous about the spice. In Shanghai, soup dumplings (xiaolongbao) and shengjianbao are the essentials.

My wife and I were a bit overwhelmed planning a two-week China trip, but Will helped us structure the Beijing days perfectly. The Forbidden City was astonishing – the sheer scale and detail. The Great Wall at Mutianyu was a highlight, especially the toboggan ride down! We also loved the Summer Palace; the Long Corridor was beautiful. Peking duck in Beijing was fantastic. Will's suggestion to visit the Hutong rickshaw ride was a unique peek into local life. Overall, the trip was well-paced and we never felt rushed. Highly recommend including Beijing early in the itinerary.

Madeline suggested spending an extra afternoon at the Terracotta Warriors rather than rushing, and I'm so glad I did. Standing in Pit No.1 seeing thousands of warriors each with a unique face was truly spine-tingling. The Xi'an city wall cycling was fun and gave great views. The Muslim Quarter is a feast for the senses – I tried lamb skewers and persimmon cakes. Madeline also recommended the Tang Paradise evening show, which was magical. The high-speed train from Beijing was smooth. I felt safe as a solo traveler. Would definitely return.

This trip was an adventure of a lifetime. The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like another planet – the glass elevator shooting up the cliff was insane. And then the glass skywalk on Tianmen Mountain? Terrifying but awesome. Chongqing's hotpot is no joke – I had a pot with so much chili oil my face was numb. Riding the cable car over the Yangtze was cool. The bullet trains between cities are super efficient. If you're into outdoor thrills, this part of China delivers.

I traveled through China with a focus on its imperial history, and the itinerary was meticulously organized. The Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven in Beijing offered profound insights into imperial rituals. The Summer Palace's Kunming Lake was serene. The high-speed train to Xi'an was punctual and comfortable. The Terracotta Army is a marvel of craftsmanship. I appreciated the mix of guided tours and free time. However, the crowds at some sites were intense; arriving early is essential. The food was delicious but spicy in Chongqing. Overall, a well-structured trip that exceeded my expectations.

Cecilia recommended going to Tianmen Mountain early to avoid crowds, which was smart. We beat the queues and had the glass walkway almost to ourselves. The views were breathtaking. But honestly, the food highlights were for me: the biangbiang noodles in Xi'an, the Chongqing hotpot (incredible depth of flavor), and the shengjianbao in Shanghai. I also loved wandering Tianzifang and trying street snacks. Cecilia's advice on the best local eateries in Zhangjiajie was spot-on. A perfect trip for a foodie who also loves nature.

As a photographer, China offered endless compositions. The symmetry of the Forbidden City, the golden sunset on the Great Wall, the misty pillars of Zhangjiajie, and the neon reflections on the Bund – each location was a visual treat. The high-speed trains allowed me to cover vast distances efficiently. I especially enjoyed the quiet morning at the Summer Palace before the crowds. The local people were welcoming. My only suggestion is to have more time in Shanghai; two days felt short. But overall, a fantastic trip for photography enthusiasts.
