Breakfast

Morning

After breakfast, begin the day's journey at the Presidential Palace. This historical building complex has witnessed significant events in China's modern history. Wander through the halls, gardens, and exhibition rooms to learn about the past and admire its magnificent architecture. (Allow about 2 hours)

Then, take a short trip to Ke Xiang. This vibrant street is lined with all kinds of food stalls and restaurants. Try local favorites like salted duck, fried buns, and other delicious snacks. Take some time to stroll around and enjoy the lively food culture here. (Allow about 1.5 hours)

Afternoon

Proceed to the Nanjing Museum. It houses a vast collection of artifacts from ancient times to modern eras, covering various fields such as history, art, and archaeology. Spend around 2.5 hours exploring the different exhibitions and getting a deep understanding of the cultural heritage of Nanjing and China as a whole.

Next, head to Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum. Walk along the solemn and stately memorial path to pay respects to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a great pioneer of China's democratic revolution. The surrounding natural scenery combined with the grand architecture makes it a must-see attraction. Adjacent to it is the Music Platform, where you can take a moment to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. (Allow about 2 hours for both)

Evening

In the evening, arrive at the Confucius Temple. The area is bustling with activity, with numerous shops, restaurants, and traditional performances. You can take a boat ride along the Qinhuai River to enjoy the beautiful night views on both sides, or simply wander around the temple area, shopping for souvenirs and trying more local cuisine. End the day with a memorable experience of Nanjing's vibrant nightlife. (Allow about 2 hours)

Q & A

This itinerary covers six locations in one day — is that realistic, or will I feel rushed?
The tour is packed, but the timing allocations are realistic for a private tour with a guide and driver. The Presidential Palace takes about 2 hours, Ke Xiang food street about 1.5 hours (including a lunch break), the Nanjing Museum about 2.5 hours, Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum and Music Platform about 2 hours combined, and the Confucius Temple area about 2 hours in the evening. With a private driver handling all transfers between locations, you're not wasting time waiting for taxis or navigating public transport. The day runs from approximately 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, which is a full day but not unreasonable for travelers who want to see Nanjing's highlights efficiently. If you prefer a slower pace, some sites can be shortened.
What is Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum like? I've heard there are many steps to climb.
Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum is a grand memorial built into the side of the Purple Mountain, dedicated to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a key figure in China's transition from imperial rule to a modern republic. The approach involves climbing 392 stone steps up a broad, tree-lined avenue to reach the white marble memorial hall at the top. The steps are evenly spaced and not particularly steep, but the number of them can be tiring on a hot day. Most visitors take their time climbing, pausing to look back at the changing perspective of the surrounding forest and city — the view improves with every section. If you have mobility concerns, you can enjoy the lower plaza and the scenic grounds without climbing all the way to the top. The adjacent Music Platform, an outdoor concert shell set among trees, offers a peaceful place to rest.
The tour mentions Ke Xiang for food. What should I try there?
Ke Xiang is one of Nanjing's most famous food streets, known for its wide variety of local specialties. The must-try dish is Nanjing salted duck (Nanjing yanshui ya) — the city's signature dish, known for its tender, flavorful meat. Other local favorites include soup-filled buns (tangbao), fried dumplings (guotie), and duck blood vermicelli soup (yaxue fensi tang), a hearty noodle soup that's a local comfort food. You'll also find vendors selling sweet osmanthus cakes and sesame-filled pastries. Your guide can help you choose stalls that are popular with locals. Ke Xiang is more about casual, affordable street eating than fine dining, which makes it a great place to try multiple dishes in one visit.
