  • Dazu Baodingshan - Beishan Rock Carvings

Early in the morning, as the first rays of sunlight penetrate the mist and shine over the vibrant city of Chongqing, our special 1-day Chongqing tour kicks off quietly.

After breakfast, we will drive you to Dazu, where you will first visit the Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings. Baoding Mountain, a mountain range famous for the art of rock carving, is renowned for its grand scale, exquisite carvings and rich themes. Upon arrival, you can walk slowly up the winding mountain road, along which green trees and birdsong add a bit of freshness and coziness to this art trip. Walking into the Baodingshan stone carving scenic area, the first thing that catches your eye is the famous Guanyin statue with a thousand hands. This Guanyin statue is as high as 8 meters, with thousands of arms, each holding a different magic weapon or treasure, in different forms, lifelike, showing the ancient craftsmen's extraordinary carving skills and rich imagination. Surrounding the Thousand-Handed Goddess of Mercy statue, there are many other stone statues, which are either standing or sitting, smiling or angry, vividly reflecting the customs and religious beliefs of the Song Dynasty society. Among the stone carvings in Baodingshan, you will also enjoy the classic stone carvings such as "Parental Grace Sutra Transformation" and "Hell Transformation".

After lunch, we will head to the Beishan Rock Carvings to continue our art exploration journey. Located in the northern suburbs of Dazu County, Beishan Rock Carvings are not far from Baodingshan Rock Carvings, but they have very different styles, each with its own unique characteristics.

Beishan stone carvings were first carved in the end of the Tang Dynasty, through the Five Dynasties, the two Song Dynasty, forming a large-scale, rich in content stone carving group. Walking into the Beishan Rock Carving Scenic Spot, you will feel like traveling back to that distant era. There are a large number of stone carvings here, with a wide range of subjects, including Buddhist stories, Taoist gods and goddesses, as well as historical figures and scenes of secular life. Each statue is delicately carved with vivid expressions, showing the ancient craftsmen's profound grasp of character and emotion.

In the Beishan stone carvings, it is especially worth mentioning those exquisite Guanyin statues. These Guanyin statues or dignified and kind, or gentle and lovely, or majestic and solemn, each with its own characteristics, so that people can not help but be moved by it.

As the sun sets, our 1-day tour of Chongqing comes to an end. We hope that the beauty and shock of Dazu Rock Carving will always remain in your heart.

Q & A

When is the best time of year for this Dazu day trip, and what should I bring?
Spring and autumn (roughly March–May and September–November) are the most comfortable for the outdoor walking at Dazu, with mild weather and clear skies. Summer can be hot and humid, and winter is cooler. For the day, bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a light layer or rain jacket — the mountain paths are outdoors and the weather can change. We'll send a note on the forecast with your booking so you're set.
What should I not miss at the rock carvings, and are photos allowed?
The Thousand-Handed Guanyin at Baoding is the centerpiece — an 8-meter statue with thousands of arms, each holding a different treasure, that you'll want to study slowly. Around it, don't miss the "Parental Grace Sutra Transformation" and "Hell Transformation" carvings, which vividly tell Song-dynasty stories. Photography rules vary by cave to protect the ancient art, so your guide will let you know where photos are welcome and where they're not.
The sites involve walking up mountain paths. Is this tour suitable for elderly travelers?
Yes, and we'll always adapt the pace to your group. The paths at Baoding and Beishan are mostly well-maintained and follow the hillside, with plenty of places to stop and rest while you admire the carvings. If anyone in your party is less mobile, just let us know and we'll set a gentler pace and suggest the easiest routes. The day is more about lingering and appreciating than climbing hard.
Are the entrance tickets to both rock-carrying sites included, and are there any extra costs?
Yes, admission to both Baoding Mountain and Beishan rock-carrying scenic areas is included in your tour, so there are no surprise charges at the gate. Transport and your guide are also included. The only optional extras you might consider are things like the loop shuttle within the larger scenic area or a souvenir, and we'll always confirm any added cost with you before you decide.
Which meals are included in this day tour, and can I try local food? Do you accommodate dietary needs?
Breakfast at your hotel and a lunch of local flavors are included in the day. The lunch gives you a taste of Chongqing / Dazu cuisine in a clean, comfortable restaurant we've chosen. If anyone in your party is vegetarian, follows a halal diet, or has a food allergy, just let us know in advance and we'll make sure the lunch is arranged to suit you.
Is this tour guided, and is it a good first-ever visit to Chinese rock art?
Yes, you'll have a knowledgeable local guide throughout the day who brings the carvings to life — explaining the Buddhist stories, the Song-dynasty scene, and the detail you might otherwise walk past. It's an excellent introduction to Chinese rock art: Baoding and Beishan are two of China's most celebrated grotto sites, and seeing them in one focused day leaves you with a genuine appreciation of the craft. If you'd like the guide in a particular language, just let us know.

Q & A

Asked by Joanne Pullman from UK | July 17,2025 18:12
Why should I choose this Dazu tour over other Chongqing attractions?
Answered by intotravelchina | July 17,2025 18:14
It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site with art that’s unique—no other place has such detailed, storytelling rock carvings from Tang to Song. It’s a deep dive into China’s art and soul.
Asked by Pandora Haywood from US | July 17,2025 17:49
Can we take photos of the rock carvings? I want to capture the details.
Answered by intotravelchina | July 17,2025 18:14
Yes, photos are allowed (no flash, please)! The Thousand-Handed Guanyin and Beishan’s elegant Guanyins make for stunning shots—you’ll want to share them.
Asked by Baldwin Rosa from Canada | July 17,2025 17:40
How is Beishan Rock Carvings different from Baodingshan?
Answered by intotravelchina | July 17,2025 18:14
Beishan is older (started in Tang Dynasty!) and has softer, more elegant carvings—think delicate Guanyins and secular scenes (like daily life). Baodingshan is grander; Beishan feels more intimate.
Asked by Owen Nicholas from UK | July 17,2025 17:23
What’s so special about the Thousand-Handed Guanyin at Baodingshan? I’ve seen similar statues before
Answered by intotravelchina | July 17,2025 18:13
It’s 8 meters tall with thousands of arms—each holding a unique treasure—and dates back to the Song Dynasty. The details (lifelike hands, expressions) and sheer scale make it one of China’s greatest rock art masterpieces. You’ll gasp when you see it!
