Q & A

I'm interested in Hakka culture beyond just the buildings. Does this tour offer cultural experiences too?
Yes — the tour includes multiple ways to experience Hakka culture beyond viewing the architecture. In Taxia Village, you walk through a living Hakka village with ancient streets and houses that are still inhabited. At the Tulou sites, your guide explains the history, social structure, and defensive functions of these unique buildings. The evening option on Day 2 includes a traditional Hakka feast — dishes like Hakka stuffed tofu, pork with preserved vegetables, and savory rice dumplings — which is an authentic taste of Hakka culinary traditions. The rural setting itself — rice paddies, bamboo groves, and the daily life of villagers — provides a cultural immersion that goes beyond what you'd get from simply looking at buildings.
Gulangyu Island is only included on the last day before departure. Will I have enough time to appreciate it?
The morning visit to Gulangyu Island is focused and efficient. You take an early ferry, visit the Piano Museum, climb Sunlight Rock for panoramic views, and explore the colonial-era streets. The total time on the island is about 2–3 hours, which is enough to see the main highlights and get a strong sense of the island's unique atmosphere. The island is compact and walkable, so you can cover the key areas without feeling rushed. After returning from the island, you still have time for Zhongshan Road, the Seafood Market, and a coastal drive along Huandao Road before your airport transfer. If you want a more leisurely Gulangyu experience, you can choose to skip the market and spend extra time on the island instead.
What is the difference between the Nanjing Tulou and the Yongding Tulou? Why visit both?
While both are Hakka Tulou, they have distinct features. The Nanjing Tulou (visited on Day 2) include the famous Tianluokeng "Four Dishes One Soup" layout — five buildings in a valley that you view from above — and Yuchanglou, which has a noticeable lean and is known as the "Leaning Tulou." The Yongding Tulou (Day 3) include Chengqilou, which is the largest Tulou in terms of floor area and once housed over 600 people across four concentric rings. The Chuxi cluster in Yongding is less touristy and set in a more natural, mountainous landscape. Visiting both gives you a full picture of Tulou architecture: from the most famous and photogenic (Nanjing) to the most grand and authentic (Yongding). Together, they represent the full spectrum of Hakka building traditions.
