A Local Shopping Guide by IntoTravelChina
I have walked Xidan more times than I can count. Located just west of the Forbidden City, this shopping district has been Beijing retail heart for decades, but it has changed dramatically since I first visited in 2017. New malls opened, old ones renovated, and the mix of brands shifted to match a younger, more style-conscious crowd. After guiding over 50 travelers through Xidan stores and negotiating enough purchases to know which floors offer real value, I have put together this guide to help you shop smart, not just spend money.
Xidan Joy City: The Youthful Anchor
Xidan Joy City opened in 2007 and remains the district most popular mall for young shoppers. It spans 11 floors with over 400 retail brands, plus a cinema and a food court on the top floors. I bring first-time visitors here because the layout is easy to navigate. The lower floors focus on fast fashion, Zara, Uniqlo, H and M, while the upper levels carry premium streetwear and sneaker brands. A guest from Germany in May 2026 found a limited-edition Li-Ning sneaker collaboration on the 6th floor that she had been searching for in Berlin for months. Joy City is also the best mall in Xidan for solo dining, with a dedicated floor of casual restaurants that serve everything from ramen to Sichuan hotpot.

Hanguang Department Store: The Beauty and Cosmetics Destination
Hanguang Department Store sits directly across from Joy City and serves a slightly older, more refined crowd. Its ground floor cosmetics hall is one of the largest in Beijing, with counters for over 60 international brands including La Mer, Chanel, Dior, and Estee Lauder. I have bought skincare here multiple times myself. The prices are standard department store retail, but Hanguang runs regular promotion events, often offering gift-with-purchase sets that you do not get at standalone brand stores. The sales staff are noticeably more knowledgeable here than at the airport duty-free counters. If you are looking for Korean beauty brands, the basement level has a dedicated section that I have not seen matched elsewhere in Beijing.

Galeries Lafayette: Parisian Style in Central Beijing
Galeries Lafayette is the Beijing outpost of the iconic Parisian department store. It opened in 2013 and occupies a striking glass building on the western edge of Xidan. The store focuses on luxury and designer brands: Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and smaller independent European labels that are difficult to find elsewhere in Beijing. I took a fashion buyer from Milan here in March 2026. She spent three hours on the second floor alone, discovering French brands she had never seen in Europe. The prices are higher than Joy City or Hanguang, but the selection is curated and the atmosphere is calmer. The in-store cafe on the 4th floor serves excellent French pastries, a welcome break after a shopping session.

Xidan Mingzhu Market: Bargain Hunting at Its Best
Xidan Mingzhu is the opposite of Galeries Lafayette. It is a multi-story market where individual vendors sell clothing, accessories, electronics, and souvenirs at negotiable prices. This is where I bring travelers who want to practice their bargaining skills. A leather backpack that starts at 280 RMB can often be taken home for 120 RMB if you negotiate patiently. I bought a silk scarf here in 2019 for 45 RMB that I still wear. The quality varies between stalls, so inspect items carefully before buying. The upper floors are quieter and vendors there are more willing to negotiate. Mingzhu is not for luxury shoppers, but for anyone looking for affordable gifts and a genuine Beijing market experience, it is essential.

How to Shop Xidan Like a Local
The key to a good Xidan visit is knowing which mall matches your goal. Joy City for mainstream fashion and dining. Hanguang for cosmetics and beauty. Galeries Lafayette for luxury and designer labels. Mingzhu for bargaining and souvenirs. The four are within a 5-minute walk of each other, connected by pedestrian crossings and an underground passageway. I recommend starting at Joy City in the late morning, crossing to Hanguang after lunch, visiting Galeries Lafayette in the mid-afternoon when the light is best for photos of the glass facade, and ending at Mingzhu before it closes at 9 PM. This sequence covers all four without backtracking.
What Most Shopping Guides Miss About Xidan
Here is what I wish someone had told me before my early visits. The underground street connecting the Xidan metro station to the shopping area is worth exploring on its own. It is lined with small bubble tea shops, phone case vendors, and discount cosmetic stores that are not listed in any guidebook. Also, the food options inside Mingzhu market are better than they look. The noodle stall on the third floor has been operating since the early 2000s and serves a bowl of zhajiangmian for 18 RMB that I consider one of the best value meals in central Beijing. Finally, avoid Xidan on national holidays. The pedestrian walkways become so crowded that moving between malls can take 20 minutes instead of the usual 2.
Why Xidan Remains Relevant in 2026
Beijing has newer shopping districts, Sanlitun, Guomao, but Xidan holds its ground because it offers something no single district can match: variety within walking distance. I have spent enough time in all of Beijing retail zones to say this confidently. You can walk from a luxury boutique to a bargain market in under five minutes, and that range is what makes Xidan unique. It is not the fanciest or the cheapest shopping area in Beijing, but it is the most honest reflection of how the city shops.
