An Honest Nature Guide by IntoTravelChina
I first visited Tianzidi Scenic Area in 2021, and it took me three trips to fully understand why this place deserves more attention than it gets. Located in Hangzhou Chun'an County, about a two-hour drive from the city center, Tianzidi is a national AAAA-level scenic area that combines karst geology, dense forest, and adventure attractions in a way that feels distinctly different from the better-known West Lake. With 90 percent forest coverage and a Guinness World Record glass skywalk, it is the kind of destination that appeals to both adrenaline seekers and families looking for a weekend escape.

The Purple Dragon Gorge Glass Skywalk
The centerpiece of Tianzidi is the Purple Dragon Gorge Glass Skywalk, which holds a Guinness World Record for the longest glass-bottomed bridge suspended over a canyon in China. The walkway stretches 168 meters across the gorge and sits 88 meters above the valley floor. I walked it for the first time in 2021 and will admit my hands were gripping the railing. The glass panels are multi-layered and reinforced, but the visual effect of looking straight down at the river below does not get easier with repetition. I have crossed it six times now, and it still makes my heart race. The best time to go is mid-morning on a weekday, when the light hits the gorge at an angle that minimizes glare on the glass.

The Purple Lotus Sky Mirror
A short walk uphill from the skywalk, the Purple Lotus Sky Mirror is a large reflective platform positioned to capture the surrounding forest and sky. It functions like a giant infinity mirror, creating the illusion that you are standing on the surface of the sky. I brought a group of photographers here in October 2023, and they spent over an hour on this single spot. The best photos come just after sunrise or just before sunset, when the low angle of the sun creates warm tones on the reflected trees. The platform is sturdy and can hold multiple visitors at once, but I recommend waiting for a clear spot to avoid other people appearing in your reflection.

Tianzi Cave: A Natural Karst Formation
Tianzi Cave is a natural karst limestone cave that formed over millions of years. The cave stretches roughly 300 meters into the hillside and contains stalactites, stalagmites, and underground streams. The lighting inside is well designed, with colored lights that highlight the rock formations without feeling gimmicky. I have explored caves across Guilin and Yunnan, and Tianzi Cave holds its own. The temperature inside stays around 18 degrees Celsius year-round, which makes it a welcome break from Zhejiang summer humidity. The walk through the cave takes about 30 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Adventure Activities: Off-Road, Zipline, and Flyover
Beyond the geological attractions, Tianzidi offers several adventure activities that I have tested firsthand. The 4x4 off-road course runs through a designated forest track and takes about 20 minutes per session. The flyover magic carpet is a seated zipline that glides above the tree canopy, offering a bird's-eye view of the gorge. I took the zipline in April 2024 and the sensation of gliding silently above the forest is surprisingly peaceful. There is also a scream fountain, where the volume of your voice determines the height of the water jet. It is aimed at younger visitors, but I have seen adults compete on it for longer than the children did.

Ecological Hikes and Forest Trails
Tianzidi has over 5 kilometers of marked hiking trails that wind through its forested hills. The elevation gain is moderate, making it accessible for most fitness levels. I have walked the main loop trail four times across different seasons, and the landscape changes noticeably. Spring brings wildflowers along the lower sections. Autumn, particularly late October, turns the hillsides into layers of yellow and orange. The trail is well signed in Chinese and English, and there are rest pavilions at regular intervals. I recommend bringing at least one liter of water per person, as the humidity can make even a moderate hike feel strenuous.

Family-Friendly Features and Camping
For families, Tianzidi has a lakeside camping area with pre-set tents and barbecue facilities. I took a family of four here in July 2025. The parents told me it was the first time their children had slept outdoors without complaining. The campsite is equipped with basic washroom facilities and a small convenience store. The lake itself is suitable for paddle boating, and the water is clean enough for swimming in designated areas during summer months. Camping requires a reservation, which I recommend making at least a week in advance during July and August.
Getting There and Best Time to Visit
Tianzidi is about 130 kilometers from downtown Hangzhou. By car, the drive takes approximately two hours via the Hangxinjing Expressway. Public buses run from Hangzhou Qiandaohu bus station to Chun'an County, from which a taxi to the scenic area costs around 30 RMB. The best months to visit are April through June and September through November. July and August are hot and humid, though the cave and forest trails remain comfortable. Winter months between December and February are quiet and offer a completely different atmosphere, with mist hanging over the gorge on colder mornings. I visited in January 2024 and had the glass skywalk almost entirely to myself.

What Sets Tianzidi Apart from Other Zhejiang Attractions
Zhejiang has no shortage of scenic areas, but Tianzidi occupies a unique space. It is less polished than Hangzhou West Lake, less commercialized than Moganshan, and more accessible than the remote villages in southern Zhejiang. The combination of a record-holding glass bridge, a natural limestone cave, and adventure activities within a single ticketed area makes it an efficient use of a weekend day. Ticket prices are around 100 RMB for adults, with separate charges for the glass skywalk and adventure activities. I have recommended Tianzidi to over 30 travelers and heard positive feedback from every single one.
