Will Google and WhatsApp work in China? The short answer is no -- unless you use international roaming or a travel eSIM. I have been guiding travellers to China since 2015, and the internet situation here is one of the biggest concerns for first-time visitors. The truth is simpler than most people expect. You do not need to disappear from the internet when you visit China. Here is how it actually works.

What Is Blocked and What Is Not

China's Great Firewall blocks most Western platforms. Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Telegram are all inaccessible on local Chinese networks. If you buy a local SIM card or connect to hotel Wi-Fi, these services simply will not load.

But some services work without any tricks. Apple iMessage and FaceTime generally work. Microsoft Bing and Outlook are accessible. WeChat, China's all-in-one messaging and payment app, works perfectly and is essential for your trip. Apple Maps also works because it uses local map data from Amap.

Method One: International Roaming

If you keep your home SIM and use international roaming, Google and WhatsApp will work without any additional setup. Roaming data routes through your home carrier's international gateway, which bypasses the firewall entirely. I used T-Mobile roaming on my last trip. My WhatsApp messages came through instantly. Google Maps loaded without issue. Gmail synced in the background.

The downside is cost. Roaming can run 5 to 15 dollars per day depending on your carrier. For longer trips, this adds up quickly.

Method Two: International Travel eSIM

This is the option I recommend to most of my guests. International eSIMs from providers like Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad route your data through Hong Kong or Singapore. This naturally bypasses the firewall -- no VPN required. You install the eSIM before your flight, activate it when you land, and your Google, WhatsApp, and Instagram all work from the moment you arrive. （Note: Some international eSIMs, such as Holafly and Saily, route data internationally and bypass the firewall. Others, including some Airalo and Nomad plans, use local routing and still require a VPN. Check the eSIM's routing type before buying.）

Airalo offers China data plans starting at around 6.50 dollars for 1 GB. Holafly has unlimited daily plans starting at about 1.50 dollars per day. These are significantly cheaper than carrier roaming. The only limitation is that you do not get a Chinese phone number, so you cannot register for services like DiDi ride-hailing without a separate local SIM.
