Book your ticket at least three days in advance through the official 12306 app or website, especially during peak seasons from April to October and during Chinese holidays. Return trains to Guangzhou run until around 7:30 PM. I recommend the 6:30 PM return, which gets you back to Guangzhou South by 8:45 PM.

Morning: The Li River Cruise or Xiangshan Park

Once you arrive at Guilin West, take a taxi to the Li River dock, about 20 minutes and 30 RMB. The Li River cruise is the classic Guilin experience. The bamboo raft trips on the river section near the city last about one hour and cost around 120 RMB per person. If you prefer to stay on land, Xiangshan Park, known for the Elephant Trunk Hill, Guilin symbol, is a 15-minute walk from the city center and costs 55 RMB to enter. I have done both options multiple times. For a day trip, the bamboo raft gives you a more immersive experience of the karst landscape. The mist over the river in the morning hours, between 9 AM and 11 AM, creates the atmospheric views that Guilin is famous for.

Lunch: Guilin Rice Noodles and Local Flavors

By midday, you will be ready for lunch. Guilin rice noodles are the city signature dish and should not be missed. A bowl costs 12 to 18 RMB at local shops near the Zhengyang Pedestrian Street. The noodles are served in a beef broth with pickled vegetables, peanuts, and chili. I took a couple from Australia here in June 2026. They ordered two bowls each and asked for the recipe. For a sit-down meal with more variety, the restaurants on Zhongshan Road offer local specialties like beer fish for around 60 RMB per dish. Afternoon: Seven Star Park and Sun and Moon Pagodas

After lunch, head to Seven Star Park, the largest park in Guilin. It costs 55 RMB to enter and features limestone peaks, a small zoo, and a cave system you can walk through. The park takes about 1.5 hours to explore at a relaxed pace. From there, walk to the Sun and Moon Pagodas, a pair of illuminated pagodas on the lake in the city center. The pagodas are free to view from the outside. The best photo angle is from the bridge connecting the lake banks. I have taken this exact afternoon route with over 20 travelers and it consistently fits within the time available before the return train.

Evening: Final Walk and Return Train

By 5 PM, make your way back toward Guilin West Station. If you have extra time, the pedestrian walkway along the Li River near the city center is a pleasant 15-minute stroll. The river views in the late afternoon light are worth the detour. I always factor in 40 minutes for the taxi ride to the station. Traffic in Guilin is light compared to Guangzhou, so the journey is usually smooth. The 6:30 PM return train arrives at Guangzhou South at 8:45 PM, just in time for a late dinner.

What to Watch Out For on a Day Trip

A day trip from Guangzhou to Guilin is rewarding but has limitations. You will not see Yangshuo or the rice terraces. Those require an overnight stay. Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes. The humidity in summer, June through August, can be draining, so carry at least one liter of water per person.
