Five Must-Do Activities to Unlock the Complete Bing'an Journey
Step onto the Iron-Chain Bridge – From the Ferry into History
Experience: The bridgehead is inscribed with the words "Long March" flanked by fluttering red flags. Beneath your feet flows the Chishui River, crossed by the Red Army in that first crossing; before you rise the stilted buildings clinging to the cliff. This is Bing'an's most solemn and photogenic welcome.
Best Time: Before 8:00 a.m., when river mist lingers and light is soft.
Explore a Bluestone Alley off Gourd Street
Key: Don't just walk the main commercial strip. Turn into the branching lanes beside Donghua Gate. The steep stone steps, the culverts under single-leg stilt houses, the old women washing vegetables at the river landings—these are the lungs through which Bing'an has breathed for a millennium.
Deep Dive: Spend ¥5 for a bowl of Chong tea in an old teahouse. The tea, fine as sand, is made from wild tea leaves fermented by insect larvae; bitter at first, it leaves a sweet aftertaste—a taste unique to the Chishui River valley.
Hear the Stone Dragons "Roar" at Shuanglong Bridge
Experience: Blow into the male dragon's right ear and listen at its left. This ancient acoustic marvel still works. Try it with children or friends—it's Bing'an's most interactive piece of heritage.
Note: Legend says the female dragon has no tongue, a symbol of protection for women crossing the river safely. Please do not climb on the carvings.
Pay Homage at the Red First Army Corps Exhibition Hall
Significance: This is the nation's only memorial hall dedicated to the Red First Army Corps. Its collection is more focused and unique than many provincial museums. Geng Biao, Liu Yalou, Yang Dezhi—generals who walked these streets before becoming founders of New China—all left their footprints here.
Reservation: Admission is free but requires ID registration. Groups are advised to call ahead: 0851-22991118.
Taste a Red Army Meal by the Chishui River
Must-Order Dishes: Steamed pork knuckle with dried bamboo tubes (the bamboo soaks up the fat, the cured meat glistens), Chishui tofu pudding (the dipping sauce is key), Bing'an grilled tofu (slow-roasted over bamboo charcoal, ¥3 per skewer).
Where to Eat: Song's Farmhouse Restaurant for tofu pudding; Ferry Farmhouse Restaurant for spicy fish—both are local favorites.
