Winter's Edge: An 8-Day Journey Through Beijing and Harbin

This route begins in Beijing's imperial courtyards and moves north to Harbin, where the Songhua River freezes solid and ice sculptors turn city parks into crystalline kingdoms. Overnight trains and high-speed rail connect the two capitals, with snow-covered villages and frozen waterfalls waiting in between. The itinerary matches bold winter landscapes with warm indoor moments – hotpot dinners, heated tea houses, and the kind of cold that makes a hot drink taste better than anywhere else.
  • Harbin – The 521‑meter super ice slide at Ice and Snow World – At the city's frozen theme park, take on the 24-lane super slide – 521 meters of polished ice with a rhythm that starts gentle, accelerates mid‑way, and smooths out at the end. The queue moves fast, the wind hits your face, and the ice beneath you hums. By night, LED lights embedded in the track turn the ride into a streak of color.

  • Beijing – Ice sledding on Shichahai Lake – Push an iron sled across the frozen lake, joining locals in a winter ritual that has been passed down for generations. The Drum Tower and grey courtyard walls rise in the distance as the sun dips low.

Arrive in Beijing, the capital of China and the starting point of your winter journey. Your driver will meet you at the airport and take you directly to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to rest or explore. Beijing in winter has a crisp, clear quality – the cold air sharpens the light, and the city feels less crowded than in other seasons. Take it easy tonight. Tomorrow you'll be walking the Great Wall.

This is the day you came for. After breakfast, head to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall – less crowded than Badaling, with equally dramatic views. A round-trip cable car is included, making the climb easier and leaving you more time to walk along the wall itself. The wall is open from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM during the season, with the cable car running 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. On the way back to the city, stop for an exterior view of the Bird‘s Nest, the iconic stadium built for the 2008 Olympics. It’s a short stop, but it‘s worth seeing against the winter light.

Today is Beijing’s imperial core. Start at Tian‘anmen Square – a vast public space that sits at the symbolic heart of the country. From there, step into the Forbidden City, the sprawling palace complex that served as the political centre of China for over 500 years through the Ming and Qing dynasties. With its 9,999 rooms – a deliberate nod to imperial numerology – the scale is almost overwhelming. Tickets must be booked in advance using passport information and sell out fast. The afternoon takes you to the Temple of Heaven, where emperors once performed rituals for a good harvest. Its Hall of Prayer is a masterpiece of wooden architecture – and in winter, the park‘s bare trees give the complex a stark, beautiful clarity.

Morning high-speed train to Harbin. The journey takes about 4.5 to 6.5 hours depending on the service. Watch the landscape transform – from the flat farmlands around Beijing to the vast, snow-covered plains of northeast China. Upon arrival, your driver will meet you at the station and take you to your hotel. The evening is yours. If you have the energy, step out into the cold – Harbin’s winter air is bracing, and the city‘s Russian-influenced architecture looks striking under streetlights. Bundle up. It gets cold here.

Start your day at the Siberian Tiger Park, home to over 500 Siberian tigers – the world‘s largest population in captivity. Winter hours are 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with last entry at 4:00 PM. Tickets: 110 RMB for standard vehicle (includes观光车) or 130 RMB for the “thrill vehicle” which allows closer viewing and feeding. After lunch, visit Saint Sophia Cathedral, Harbin’s most iconic landmark – a Byzantine-style Russian Orthodox church built in 1907. The interior is now a museum; tickets are around 15–25 RMB. Walk along Central Street, Harbin‘s main pedestrian thoroughfare lined with European-style buildings – a great spot for photos and snacks. In the evening, your guide and driver will take you to the Ice and Snow World. Your admission ticket is included; the guide does not enter with you. The park is open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM during the season, with last entry at 9:30 PM. Adult tickets are around 328 RMB. Your driver will pick you up afterwards and return you to your hotel. Dress for extreme cold – you’ll be outdoors for hours.

After breakfast, your driver will take you on the 6- to 7-hour drive to China Snow Town (Shuangfeng Forest Farm), a village deep in the mountains of Heilongjiang province famous for its heavy snowfall and the iconic “snow mushroom” houses – thick snow piled high on rooftops. The town is small and walkable. The entry ticket is around 120–180 RMB and is included. Once you‘re checked into your local inn, the rest of the day is yours. The village offers various snow activities – tubing, sledding, and snowmobile rides – though these are not included in the ticket and can be purchased on-site based on your preference. At night, the village lights up, and the snow-covered houses look like something from a fairy tale. It’s cold – really cold – but that‘s the point.

Morning visit to Snow Valley, a nearby area with deeper snow and more rugged terrain. Optional activities here include snowmobilinghorse-drawn sledsreindeer feeding, and dog sledding – all available for an additional fee. These are not included in the tour price; you pay on-site based on what interests you. After a few hours in the snow, begin the return drive to Harbin. The drive takes another 6 to 7 hours. By evening, you‘ll be back in the city, checked into your hotel, and ready for a warm meal and a good night’s rest.

Your driver will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the airport or train station for your onward journey. Eight days, two provinces, one route that started at the Great Wall and ended deep in a snow-covered village in the northeast. You‘ve experienced Beijing’s imperial history, Harbin‘s Russian-influenced ice city, and the raw winter of rural Heilongjiang – and that’s the point. Stay warm, and safe travels.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
