Gulangyu is unique because of its blend of colonial architecture, car-free streets, and musical heritage. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, foreign consulates and missionaries built European-style villas on the island, creating a distinct architectural landscape that survives today. No cars or bicycles are allowed — you explore entirely on foot, which gives it a peaceful, unhurried atmosphere rare in Chinese cities. The island is also known as "Piano Island" — it has one of the highest densities of pianos per capita in China, and the Piano Museum displays historic instruments from around the world. The beaches, gardens, and winding alleys make it easy to spend several hours just wandering.
Day 4 includes hiking Tianyou Peak in Wuyi Mountain. How physically demanding is this?
The hike up Tianyou Peak involves climbing about 800 stone steps to the summit, which takes most visitors 30–45 minutes at a steady pace. The steps are well-maintained but can be steep in sections. The effort is rewarded with one of the most famous views in China — a panoramic vista of the Nine-Bend Stream winding through the valley below, with misty peaks rising on all sides. You can take breaks along the way, and there are several platforms to rest and take photos. If you have mobility concerns, you can skip the climb and explore the lower areas of the scenic zone, which are equally beautiful and much flatter. The tea plantation visit in the afternoon requires minimal walking.
The Jiuqu Stream rafting on Day 5 sounds interesting. What kind of rafting is it — is it a wild white-water experience or something calmer?
It is a calm, scenic rafting experience, not white-water rapids. You sit on a bamboo raft (typically 6–8 passengers per raft), and a boatman uses a long pole to guide you downstream along the Nine-Bend Stream. The water is gentle and clear, and the focus is entirely on the scenery — towering cliffs, dense bamboo forests, and ancient rock carvings along the banks. You'll also see mysterious hanging coffins tucked into crevices high on the cliff faces, a burial tradition of the ancient Minyue people. The ride lasts about 90 minutes and is one of the most peaceful and photographic experiences in Wuyi Mountain. No special clothing or equipment is needed, though you may want to protect your phone from water splashes.
