Before the Crowds, After the Climb: A 9‑Day China Journey

I've led this 9-day China group tour more than sixty times, and the mountains only give themselves up to early risers. Ride the Bailong Elevator before the queues, cross the glass bridge while your nerve lasts, climb Tianmen's stairway before the haze builds, and let Chongqing's hotpot and Hongya lights close the day. Timing is the craft.
  • Guangzhou – Gongfu tea ceremony in a local tea house – Sit at a wooden table as a tea master performs the full ritual: warming the cups, rinsing the leaves, and pouring with a steady hand. Guests learn the steps – from the first steep to the final sip – and taste oolong varieties that change flavor with each infusion.

  • Qingyuan (near Guangzhou) – Gulong Gorge adventure day – A short drive from the city leads into a canyon of waterfalls and sheer cliffs. Walk the Yuntian glass bridge suspended above the falls, then ride the cliff coaster – a 3.7km track with 28 bends that hugs the mountainside. In season (May–October), the 6km canyon rafting adds a 378‑meter drop and 30 minutes of splash‑and‑turn momentum.

Arrive in Guangzhou, the southern gateway to your China adventure. Your driver will meet you at the airport and take you directly to your hotel. The evening is yours to explore. Beijing Road, a pedestrian street that has been a commercial center for centuries, is nearby — a convenient spot to try some Cantonese street food and see the lights of the Grand Buddha Temple without going far from the hotel. It's a low‑key start before the real journey begins.

Your only full day in Guangzhou gives you a solid taste of the city‘s character. Start in Yongqing Fang, a restored lane house district that shows Cantonese culture through its preserved architecture and local crafts. Walk through Beijing Road and see the Grand Buddha Temple — a functioning monastery that stands in sharp contrast to the shopping crowds outside. Cross to Shamian Island, where 19th‑century European consulates and churches line tree‑shaded streets — it’s a quiet break from the city‘s pace. End at Haixinsha Park, with a view of Canton Tower from across the river. If you want, you can go up the tower for the night view, but it’s entirely optional — the real highlights are still ahead.

Head to Gulong Gorge in Qingyuan, about 1.5 hours north of Guangzhou. You start at the Dinosaur Valley — hidden among the trees are life‑sized dinosaur models, plus tribal performers and stone carvings to set the mood. Then the Waterfall Group comes into view: 810 meters of cascading water dropping 263 meters, the longest stepped waterfall in the country. You cross the Glass Bridge — suspended 530 meters above the valley, 329 meters long, with 5D effects that crack and shatter underfoot. Then pick your ride: the Cliff Coaster or the Canyon QQ Coaster — both send you barrelling down the mountainside through sharp bends and sudden drops. If you visit in summer, you can swap the coaster for white‑water rafting — 6 kilometers of rapids with a 378‑meter drop. Either way, it’s a full day outdoors: good shoes, a change of clothes, and a tolerance for getting wet.

Morning train to Zhangjiajie. The high‑speed rail cuts through the province, and by the time you step off, you‘re in a different China — mountains instead of city blocks. Once you check into your hotel, the rest of the day is yours. There’s not much planned, and that‘s intentional. Tomorrow you’re heading into the national park. Use the evening to rest, or take a short walk around the town to get your bearings. The real work starts tomorrow.

This is the day that puts Zhangjiajie on the map. You‘ll enter the national park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and take the Bailong Elevator — the world’s tallest outdoor lift, which rises 326 meters in under two minutes. At the top, you‘re in Yuanjiajie, the area whose towering sandstone pillars inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. From there you’ll move to Tianzi Mountain, where the view opens up across a sea of peaks. This is a day of big scenery and steady walking — bring comfortable shoes and a camera with room to spare.

Another day, another landscape. Today you‘re off to the Grand Canyon — a deeper, narrower gorge than the national park. The headline act is the glass bridge, a transparent walkway suspended high above the canyon floor. But the real draw here is the “7‑of‑5” activity package: you choose five out of seven adventure options, including via ferratazip‑lining, and a slide down the canyon wall. This is not a day for standing still — it’s for the part of you that likes edges.

One last Zhangjiajie morning, and it’s a big one. Tianmen Mountain is a 1,518‑meter peak reached by the world‘s longest high‑altitude cable car — a 7.5‑kilometre ride that rises 1,279 metres. At the top, you’ll see Tianmen Cave, a natural arch cut into the cliff face, reached by climbing the 999 steps. Then walk the Guigudao — a plank path carved into the cliffside, named after the legendary strategist Guiguzi who supposedly retreated to these mountains. It‘s narrow, exposed, and not for the faint‑headed — but the views straight down into the valley are worth it. If you still want more height, there’s a glass walkway along the cliff edge before you head down. Afternoon train to Chongqing — about four hours. By the time you arrive, the landscape has flipped completely: you‘re in a city built on hills, not plains.

After breakfast, the guide takes you through Chongqing's vertical cityscape. At Liziba, a monorail passes straight through a residential building. The station and the apartment block share the same structure — residents live above the tracks, and the train runs through their building's midsection. Then you visit Kuixinglou, a pavilion built on the edge of a cliff. It was once a temple dedicated to the god of literature and is now one of the best viewpoints over the city. From there, you walk down the Eighteen Steps — a steep staircase with eighteen landings that has connected Chongqing's upper and lower city for centuries. The route itself is a historical site; you can still see old shop signs and stone carvings along the way. At the bottom, you reach Hongya Cave — a hillside of wooden stilt houses stacked eleven stories high against the cliff. At night, the buildings light up and reflect across the Jialing River, turning the whole riverbank into a golden wall. If it's a weekend, your guide will also take you to a good spot to watch the drone show over the water.

Your driver will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the airport or train station for your onward journey. Nine days, three regions, one route that started in a coastal trading city and ended in a mountain metropolis. The contrast is the point — and you‘ve just traveled through it.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
