You meet your guide and driver in Beijing at midday and drive about two hours to Gubei Water Town in Miyun District. After checking in, you explore the resort at your own pace: the Sima Small Distillery, Yongshun Dye House with its indigo cloth, Yinghua Academy, and the YuanTong Pagoda for a view over the old town. Later in the afternoon, you head to Simatai Great Wall. You take the cable car up, and if you like, enjoy afternoon tea on the wall (optional, extra cost). Around 7:00 PM, the wall lights up — you watch from the wall or below, depending on the day. Then you take the cable car back down. After that, you return to Gubei Water Town for the evening shows on Wangjing Street: iron flower throwing, live drama, and open-air film screenings at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM. You stay overnight in a 3-star hotel inside the water town.

Q & A

What kind of accommodation do we stay in?
You stay in a 3-star hotel inside Gubei Water Town. Rooms are comfortable and within walking distance of the main sights. If you have specific room preferences, let us know when booking.
What if it rains?
The tour runs in light rain. The Great Wall and Gubei Water Town are both outdoor experiences, so bring a rain jacket. If the weather is severe, the night lighting or shows may be canceled — your guide will inform you and adjust the schedule where possible.
What should I wear or bring?
Comfortable walking shoes are essential — the Great Wall paths are original Ming stonework, worn and uneven in places. In winter, bring a down jacket; it can be windy on the mountain. In summer, bring sun protection and a hat. A rain jacket is useful in any season.
What is the best time of year to visit Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall?
Mid-October is generally considered the best window — clear autumn air, red climbing vines on the watchtowers, and fall foliage across the ridgelines. Late December through February is also popular if you don‘t mind the cold, with snow on the wall and outdoor hot springs being a signature winter experience. Summer (June–August) is green and lush but can be hot and crowded. Spring (April–May) is mild, though sandstorms occasionally occur in Beijing.
What is the difference between staying inside and outside Gubei Water Town?
If you stay at a hotel outside the water town, your entrance ticket is only valid for the day of entry. If you stay overnight inside Gubei Water Town, your ticket remains valid for two days, allowing you to explore at a more relaxed pace. However, accommodation inside the water town is limited, and currently only 3-star hotels are available.
How much does the afternoon tea on Simatai Great Wall cost?
The afternoon tea on the Great Wall is an optional add-on and costs approximately $170 USD per person (around 1,200 RMB). It needs to be booked in advance so the team can prepare the setup on the wall.
