— An Honest Travel Guide by IntoTravelChina
Does my insurance cover China travel? The short answer is: your regular domestic health insurance almost certainly does not. I have been sending travelers to China since 2015, and I have seen too many guests assume their policy follows them overseas. It usually does not. Medicare, the NHS, and most domestic health plans stop at the border. Here is what you need to check before you go.
Your Domestic Health Insurance Will Not Cover China
This is the most common misunderstanding I encounter. Standard US health insurance plans do not cover medical treatment in China. Medicare does not cover any care received outside the United States. The UK's NHS does not extend to China. European public health systems offer no coverage there either. If you get sick or injured in China and rely on your home insurance, you will be paying out of pocket for everything.
I had a guest from Canada who fell and fractured his wrist while hiking near Guilin. He assumed his provincial health plan would cover the hospital visit. It did not. He ended up paying 4,000 RMB for the emergency room, X-rays, and a cast. He was reimbursed by his private travel insurance later, but the upfront cost was a shock. If he had not purchased supplemental travel insurance, he would have been stuck with the full bill.
What a Good China Travel Insurance Policy Includes
A proper travel medical policy for China should cover several things. Emergency medical treatment and hospitalization are the most important. Medical evacuation is essential -- if you need to be flown home for serious care, that can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage protect your investment if something goes wrong before or during your trip.
I recommend a minimum medical coverage limit of 300,000 US dollars. Check that your insurer can directly guarantee payment to hospitals in China. International hospitals in Beijing and Shanghai often require a deposit before treatment, and direct billing saves you from having to pay large sums upfront. Many standard travel insurance policies have excluded COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Check that your policy specifically includes it — or purchase a plan with COVID-19 coverage as an add-on if you want protection.
What to Verify Before You Buy
Before purchasing a policy, confirm three things. First, that China is specifically listed as a covered destination. Some policies exclude parts of Asia. Second, that the medical evacuation limit is high enough -- ideally unlimited or at least 500,000 dollars. Third, that the policy covers your planned activities. If you plan to hike, cycle, or do any adventure activities, make sure they are not excluded.
The Bottom Line for 2026 Travelers
To summarize: does my insurance cover China travel? Your domestic health insurance probably does not. Buy a dedicated travel medical policy with at least 300,000 dollars in coverage, medical evacuation, and direct billing capability. Check that China is listed and your activities are included. The cost of a good policy is small compared to the cost of an uninsured medical emergency.
