One-Day Chongqing Itinerary Guide

Morning: People's Liberation Monument & HongyaCave

Start your day in People's Liberation Monument (Jiefangbei), the central hub of Chongqing's commercial district. Take the Metro Line 1 or 2 to Jiefangbei Station and walk to the monument. Jiefangbei is surrounded by numerous shopping malls, restaurants, and cafes, making it a great place to get a feel for the city’s vibrant urban life. You can enjoy some morning coffee, explore shops, or simply walk around the bustling streets.

Afterward, take a 10-minute walk to HongyaCave, a unique architectural gem hanging off the cliffs overlooking the Jialing River. HongyaCave is a collection of stilt houses and traditional buildings that give visitors a glimpse of old Chongqing. You can wander through narrow streets, browse local Handicrafts, and enjoy the views of the river and city. The area is also known for its street food stalls—don’t miss out on tasting some spicy noodles or skewers.


Lunch: Chongqing Hotpot

For lunch, make your way to a nearby Chongqing Hotpot restaurant, a must-try when in the city. Haidilao Hotpot and Xiao Tian E Hotpot are both popular choices among locals and tourists alike. Chongqing Hotpot is famous for its spicy, numbing flavor, thanks to the liberal use of Sichuan peppercorns and chili peppers in the broth. You can choose from a variety of meats, seafood, vegetables, and tofu to cook in the Hotpot. After enjoying your delicious meal, take some time to relax and savor the bold, spicy flavors of Chongqing.

After lunch, hop into a taxi and head to Ciqikou Ancient Town, which is about a 20-minute ride away. The ancient town is a charming, historic area that preserves the traditional architecture and culture of old Chongqing. Stroll through the narrow streets, take in the ancient buildings, and stop by the many artisan shops selling local crafts and snacks. You can try the famous Chongqing noodles or snack on traditional sweet treats like sesame cakes.


Afternoon: Ciqikou Ancient Town & Yangtze River Cable Car

After about an hour in Ciqikou, continue your day by heading to theYangtzeRiver Cable Car. Take a 20-minute taxi ride or take Metro Line 1 to Yangtze River Cable Car Station. The cable car is a distinctive feature of Chongqing, offering visitors a unique perspective of the city as it crosses theYangtzeRiver. From the cable car, you’ll get panoramic views of the river, mountains, and cityscape. The ride is especially scenic at sunset, when the city’s lights start to twinkle.

Once you've enjoyed the views, it's time to head towards Jialing River Bridge, where you can walk along the riverbanks and enjoy the skyline from the water. The view here is spectacular, with the modern high-rises of Chongqing blending with the natural beauty of the mountains and rivers surrounding the city.


Evening: NanshanMountain & Night Market at Jiefangbei

As the evening sets in, head to NanshanMountain, located just south of the city center. From Jiefangbei, take a taxi to the top of Nanshan One Tree Hill Viewpoint, which will take around 30 minutes. This location offers a stunning view of Chongqing’s skyline as the city lights begin to glow. The night view of the city, with theYangtzeRiver winding through the lights, is one of the most iconic sights in Chongqing.

Afterward, return to Jiefangbei to explore the bustling night market. This vibrant area is alive with activity, filled with food vendors and small shops. You can try more street food, like chuan chuan xiang (skewers) or la zi ji (spicy chicken), and enjoy the lively atmosphere of this central hub.

If you're still hungry, stop by one of the many local restaurants in the area and enjoy a late-night snack or a refreshing drink while soaking in the city's energetic vibe.
