How Early to Apply for an L-Visa? The 2026 Timeline

— An Honest Travel Guide by IntoTravelChina

How early to apply for an L-visa to China? The short answer is one month before your trip -- but not earlier than three months. I have been managing China visa applications for travelers since 2015, and the most common mistake I see is getting the timing wrong. Apply too early and the visa expires before you travel. Apply too late and you are scrambling for express service. Here is the exact timeline I give every guest.

The One-Month Rule Is the Sweet Spot

Apply roughly one month before your planned departure date. That gives you enough time for the COVA online pre-review, which takes one to six calendar days, plus four working days of standard processing after your passport is submitted. Add a few days for pickup, and the total is about two to three weeks from start to finish. One month is comfortable without being too early.

I had a guest last year who submitted his application exactly five weeks before his trip. His COVA pre-review took four days, passport processing took the standard four working days, and he had the visa in hand eighteen days before flying. No stress, no rush fees. That is the ideal scenario.

Do Not Apply More Than Three Months Ahead

This is the rule that trips up many travelers. A standard China tourist visa is valid for three months from the date of issue. If you apply in January for a trip in June, your visa will expire in April -- before you even board your flight. I once had a couple from Canada who applied four months early because they wanted to get it out of the way. They had to reapply entirely. (Note: as of February 2026, Canadian citizens are eligible for visa-free entry for stays up to 30 days)

The earliest you should submit your application is three months before your entry date. The latest is two to three weeks before, though that leaves no margin for delays. The window between three months and one month out is the safe zone.

Planning Ahead Can Backfire on Timing

I see this every year. Travelers apply months ahead thinking they are being smart. But a China tourist visa is only valid for three months. Apply too early and you have to start over. The right move is to mark your calendar for one month before departure. That keeps you safe and your visa valid.

Peak Seasons Demand Extra Time

Not all months process at the same speed. From March through September, Chinese consulates handle higher volumes. The Chinese Embassy in Tanzania issued a notice in April 2026 explicitly warning travelers to apply at least three weeks ahead during peak season. I recommend six to eight weeks if you are applying between March and September, or if your trip falls near Chinese New Year in February.

What About Express Service?

Express processing cuts the wait to two to three working days. Rush service can deliver in one working day. Both cost extra and are never guaranteed. I have used rush service successfully for guests with emergencies, but I never recommend relying on it. The safer path is to plan ahead.

The Bottom Line for 2026 Travelers

To summarize: how early to apply for an L-visa is one month before your trip, and no earlier than three months. Start your COVA application online at consular.mfa.gov.cn. Wait for pre-approval. Submit your passport. Collect four working days later. If you are traveling during peak season, add two to three extra weeks. And if your country is on the visa-free list, you may not need to apply at all. (Note: US citizens are not on the current visa-free list and still need an L-visa for tourism)

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
