Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a 5,596m-high sacred peak in Lijiang, is the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Revered by the Naxi people as "Three Gods of War," its 13 peaks and 19 modern glaciers dominate the Yunnan skyline. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it’s famed for alpine ecosystems, cable cars, and the epic Impression Lijiang outdoor show.
Historical Overview
Formed during the Himalayan Orogeny 60 million years ago, the mountain has been a Naxi spiritual center since the 7th century. In 1988, it became a National Key Scenic Area, balancing tourism with conservation. Key events include the 2007 opening of the world’s highest gondola (4,368m) and the 2013 launch of Zhang Yimou’s Impression Lijiang.
