The Yungang Grottoes are one of the most famous cave complexes in China and a World Heritage Site. The Yungang Grottoes were first excavated during the Northern Wei Dynasty, about 1,600 years ago. This cave complex is not only a treasure of Chinese cave art, but also an important witness to the exchange of different civilizations on the ancient Silk Road.
There are now 45 major caves, 252 large and small niches, and more than 59,000 stone statues. The Yungang Grottoes have a unique artistic style, with elements of Indian and Sino-Siamese art, as well as Greek and Roman architectural shapes, decorative patterns and features. These statues and murals demonstrate the excellent skills and aesthetic pursuits of ancient craftsmen.
