This spring, I discovered the most bustling first tier cities in China

I’ve always been fascinated by China’s diverse cities, each with its unique charm. This spring, I set my sights on Guangzhou. After travelling, I discovered that the best month to visit Guangzhou is indeed spring, particularly from March to May, when the weather is mild, the flowers are in full bloom, and the city is alive with energy. Here’s my detailed four-day itinerary that will let you get to know the essence of Guangzhou.

Day 1: Modern Guangzhou and Nighttime Splendor

Morning: Guangzhou Tower and Zhujiang New Town

My journey began in the heart of Guangzhou’s modern district. After arriving at the airport, I took the convenient metro to Zhujiang New Town, where the iconic Guangzhou Tower, also known as the “Little Waist,” stands tall. Standing at 433 meters, the tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. I purchased my ticket online in advance to avoid the long queues, and the 150-yuan admission fee was well worth it for the stunning vistas.

Afternoon: Guangdong Provincial Museum

Next, I headed to the Guangdong Provincial Museum, a must-visit for anyone interested in the region’s history and culture. The museum is free to enter, but it’s adVisable to book tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons. I spent a few hours exploring the exhibits, which ranged from ancient artifacts to contemporary art, gaining a deeper understanding of Guangdong’s rich heritage.

Evening: Zhujiang River Night Cruise

As the sun set, I embarked on a Zhujiang River night cruise. The “Crystal” cruise ship was a perfect choice, offering a delicious dinner along with a mesmerizing light show. The view of the illuminated Guangzhou Tower and the Hunted Bridge was simply breathtaking. The cruise lasted a couple of hours, and it was a wonderful way to end the day.

Day 2: Exploring the Old West District

Morning: Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

On my second day, I started with a visit to the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, a masterpiece of Lingnan architecture. The adult ticket price of 10 yuan was a steal for the intricate wood carvings, brick carvings, and stone carvings that adorned the hall. I spent a good couple of hours here, appreciating the craftsmanship and learning about the history of the Chen family.

Afternoon: Yongqing Fang and Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street

Next, I made my way to Yongqing Fang, a charming old neighborhood with traditional Lingnan architecture. Walking along the alleys, I could almost feel the history seeping through the walls. I also visited the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, housed in the former residence of Li Yuwen, a Qing Dynasty scholar, which added to the cultural experience.

Afterward, I strolled through Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, a bustling commercial area filled with shops and restaurants. I tried some local snacks like fish skin noodles and马蹄糕 (water chestnut cake), which were absolutely delicious.

Day 3: Nature and Culture

Morning: Baiyun Mountain

On the third day, I decided to get some fresh air and exercise by visiting Baiyun Mountain. I took the cable car up to the top, which saved me a lot of time and effort. The views from the summit were spectacular, and I could see the entire city of Guangzhou spread out below me. I also hiked a bit along the trails, enjoying the natural beauty.

Afternoon: Yuexiu Park

After Baiyun Mountain, I went to Yuexiu Park, one of Guangzhou’s largest parks. It’s a great place to relax and learn about the city’s history. I visited the Five Rams Statue, a symbol of Guangzhou, and the Zhenhai Tower, which offers a panoramic view of the park.

Evening: Beijing Road Pedestrian Street

In the evening, I returned to the city center and explored Beijing Road Pedestrian Street. This was a shopper’s paradise, with a wide variety of stores selling everything from souvenirs to high-end fashion. I also tried some more local cuisine, like roasted goose and double-skin milk, which were both amazing.

Day 4: Longlong Tourist Resort

All Day: Chimelong Tourist Resort

On my final day in Guangzhou, I spent the whole day at Chimelong Tourist Resort, one of China’s top theme park destinations. The resort has four major theme parks and four theme hotels, offering a wide range of activities for all ages. I visited the Chimelong Safari Park, where I got up close and personal with some amazing animals. The park also has some great shows and performances that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Accommodation and Transportation Tips

For accommodation, I stayed at a budget-friendly民宿 (homestay) in Beijing Road, which was convenient for exploring the city. The room was clean and comfortable, and the host was very friendly and helpful.

In terms of transportation, Guangzhou has an extensive and efficient public transportation system. I used the metro and buses extensively, and they were both affordable and reliable. I also used ride-sharing apps like Didi Chuxing for shorter trips, which was very convenient.

My trip to Guangzhou this spring was truly unforgettable. The city’s rich culture, delicious food, and vibrant atmosphere left a lasting impression on me. From the modern skyscrapers of Zhujiang New Town to the historic streets of Yongqing Fang, Guangzhou offers a unique blend of old and new. If you’re planning a Trip to China, I highly recommend adding Guangzhou to your itinerary, especially during the spring months. You won’t be disappointed!
