A city with grasslands, forests, and snow capped mountains at the same time

Altay, Xinjiang, China. Riding a horse to experience the natural scenery

When I first heard about Altay Prefecture in Xinjiang, China, I was intrigued by the description: a place where vast grasslands, dense forests, and snow-capped mountains coexist in perfect harmony. As someone who loves exploring nature, I knew I had to visit. And let me tell you, it exceeded all my expectations.

1. Arrival in Altay: A City of Natural Wonders

My journey began with a flight to Ürümqi, followed by a domestic flight to Altay Airport. As I stepped off the plane, I was immediately struck by the fresh, crisp air and the stunning views of the Altai Mountains in the distance. The city of Altay itself is a charming blend of modern amenities and traditional architecture, with a vibrant local culture that's evident in every street corner.

After checking into my hotel, I decided to take a stroll around the city. I was pleased to find that despite its natural beauty, Altay is also a well-developed tourist destination with plenty of restaurants, shops, and accommodations to choose from.

2. Riding Through the Grasslands: A Nomadic Experience

The next morning, I embarked on a horseback riding tour of the Altay Grasslands. Riding a horse through the open plains, with the wind in my hair and the scent of wildflowers in the air, was an incredibly liberating experience. My guide, a local Kazakh, shared stories of his nomadic lifestyle and pointed out various plants and animals along the way.

The grasslands stretched as far as the eye could see, dotted with yurts (traditional nomadic dwellings) and herds of horses and cattle. It was a scene straight out of a postcard, and I couldn't help but feel grateful to be experiencing it firsthand.

3. Exploring the Forests: A Hike Through Nature's Cathedral

After the grasslands, I ventured into the dense forests that cover the lower slopes of the Altai Mountains. The air was cool and damp, and the sound of rustling leaves and birdsong filled the air. I followed a well-marked trail that wound through the trees, passing by crystal-clear streams and hidden waterfalls.

The forests of Altay are home to a diverse array of wildlife, including bears, wolves, and various species of birds. While I didn't spot any bears during my hike, I did see a few deer grazing in a clearing, which was a magical sight.

4. Reaching the Snow-Capped Peaks: A View to Remember

The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly the hike to the snow-capped peaks of the Altai Mountains. The trail was steep and challenging, but the views from the summit were absolutely breathtaking. From up there, I could see the entire Altay region spread out below me, with the grasslands, forests, and mountains all blending together in a seamless tapestry of natural beauty.

The snow-capped peaks themselves were a sight to behold, gleaming in the sunlight and casting long shadows over the valleys below. I spent a good hour just sitting there, soaking in the view and feeling grateful to be alive.

5. Why Altay Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List

In conclusion, my trip to Altay was an unforgettable experience. From the vast grasslands to the dense forests and snow-capped mountains, this region has it all. And the best way to experience it all is on horseback, like the nomadic Kazakhs have done for centuries.

What sets Altay apart is its unique combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Whether you're a nature lover, a history buff, or just looking for a unique travel experience, Altay has something for everyone. So why not add it to your travel bucket list? You won't regret it.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
