Qixi Festival

The Qixi Festival, also known as Chinese Valentine's Day, takes place on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, celebrating the romantic legend of the cowherd and the weaver girl, symbolizing love and devotion.

As the summer sun casts its golden glow over the eastern horizon, a celestial tale of love and longing unfolds, inviting travelers from afar to experience the enchanting charm of China's Qixi Festival. This ancient festival, celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, weaves together mythology, tradition, and the sweetness of romantic love, creating a magical atmosphere that transcends cultural boundaries.

Falling on a day when the skies are believed to be at their clearest, the Qixi Festival is a celebration of the legendary meeting between the Cowherd (Niu Lang) and the Weaver Girl (Zhi Nu), two star-crossed lovers whose love story has captivated hearts for centuries. On this night, the stars seem to align, painting the heavens with a palette of romance and dreams.

The story of Niu Lang and Zhi Nu tells of two beings from vastly different worlds who, despite the odds, fell deeply in love. Their union, however, was not to be, as the heavens themselves stood in their way. In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Weaver Girl was forced to return to her celestial realm, leaving Niu Lang behind on Earth. But once a year, on the night of Qixi, the magical powers of the cosmos allow them to cross the vast expanse of the Milky Way, reuniting for a fleeting moment under the watchful gaze of the millions of stars.

The Qixi Festival is a tapestry of romantic traditions and customs that celebrate love in all its forms. Women, in particular, take this opportunity to express their wishes for a fulfilling love life, often by writing prayers on pieces of paper and hanging them on bamboo trees or releasing lanterns into the night sky. Young lovers exchange gifts, often handmade, to signify their affection and commitment. Additionally, the festival is marked by poetic recitals, storytelling sessions, and the enjoyment of traditional snacks like glutinous rice balls, each bite imbued with the sweetness of love.

At its core, the Qixi Festival is a celebration of love, not just between romantic partners but also among friends, family, and the broader community. It is a time to reflect on the power of love to transcend boundaries, heal wounds, and bring people together. The festival encourages us to cherish the connections we have with others, to celebrate the beauty of love in all its forms, and to believe in the possibility of miracles, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
