Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, honors the ancient poet Qu Yuan with dragon boat races, eating zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves), and various cultural traditions.

In the ancient land of the Orient, there is a festival which, like a link through time and space, connects the past with the present, perfectly blending ancient traditions with modern vigor. This festival is the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar every year. Through this article, we sincerely invite you, our friends from afar, to join us on this marvelous journey to explore the culture of Chinese Dragon Boat Festival and experience the charm of traditional Chinese Festivals.

The Dragon Boat Festival, a festival that carries a deep historical and cultural heritage, can trace its origin back to the Warring States period. The most popular story is the legend of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan, a talented and loyal minister of the Chu state, was framed by slander for his direct advice, and eventually threw himself into the Miluo River to die for his country. In his honor, the people rowed boats into the river to try to find and rescue Qu Yuan's body, and at the same time threw dumplings to feed the fish and shrimp in the river to prevent them from infesting Qu Yuan's body. This action gradually evolved into the custom of Dragon Boat Racing and eating zongzi that we know today.

During the Dragon Boat Festival, you will have the opportunity to experience a range of colorful traditional customs. First, try your hand at Making Zongzi. Choose the finest glutinous rice and fresh fillings, and under the guidance of locals, fold the green leaves into a small funnel shape, gently scoop in the glutinous rice and fillings, and then tie it up tightly with a thin rope. When you taste your own hand-made zongzi, the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction will be hard to describe.

In addition, dragon boat racing is one of the indispensable activities of the Dragon Boat Festival. You can stand on the shore and watch an exciting dragon boat race. With the thunder of drums, a dragon boat cuts through the water like an arrow off the string, and the team members work together and paddle hard, showing the spirit of unity, cooperation and courage.

Dragon Boat Festival is not only an ancient festival, it is also a cultural carrier full of innovation and vitality. While preserving the traditional customs, modern people have also injected new elements into the Dragon Boat Festival. For example, in some places, you can see live broadcasts of dragon boat races incorporating modern technology, allowing viewers who cannot be there in person to feel the intensity and excitement of the races. At the same time, Dragon Boat Festival celebrations are often combined with tours and cultural exhibitions to provide visitors with a richer and more diverse experience. While enjoying the joy and fun brought by the Dragon Boat Festival, we also remind you to pay attention to the following points: firstly, when participating in water activities, please make sure to comply with the safety regulations and wear life-saving equipment; secondly, when tasting food, please take the right amount to avoid overdoing it which may lead to ill health; lastly, when participating in the traditional cultural activities, please respect the local customs and habits and work together to create a harmonious and friendly cultural atmosphere.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
