exploring Beijing with your eyes

It is no longer just a coordinate, but a civilization that you can truly perceive

There are millions of ways to open Beijing, and the most direct answer is to explore with your eyes - it's the imperial epic flowing between the red walls and yellow tiles, the mottled fireworks on the green bricks of the alleys, the hunting wind passing by the beacon tower of The Great Wall, the oil fragrance rising from the roast duck oven, and the millennium echoes in the singing of Peking Opera. When we use our gaze as a pen to outline the historical contours of the central axis of the Forbidden City, blend the poetic landscape of Kunming Lake in the Summer Palace, and capture the pulse of fashion in the neon lights of Sanlitun, this city will unfold a civilization scroll spanning six hundred years with the most vivid posture.

The Forbidden City: The Historical Code Under the Roots of the Imperial City

As the starting point of the Beijing itinerary, the Forbidden City is the core of understanding the royal culture of the Ming and Qing dynasties. This world's largest surviving wooden ancient architectural complex connects classic landscapes such as the Hall of Supreme Harmony, Qianqing Palace, and Imperial Garden with a central axis. It is recommended to enter through the Meridian Gate and travel north along the central axis, focusing on the magnificent architecture of the Hall of Supreme Harmony and the royal cultural relics of the Treasure Hall. If you have enough time, you can climb up to Jingshan and overlook the panoramic view of the Forbidden City.

Strategy tip:Advance booking of tickets through official channels is required, with a daily limit of 80000 people. There may be no tickets available for on-site purchases.

It is suggested to rent an electronic interpreter or follow a tour guide to understand the historical details behind the building, such as the symbolic meaning of the "roof figures".

Temple of Heaven: A Millennium Ceremony of Dialogue with Heaven

From the Forbidden City to the south, The Temple of Heaven is a sacred site for Ming and Qing emperors to worship the heavens, and its layout of "round sky and square earth" contains profound philosophy. Recommend entering from the south gate and visiting the Round Hill Altar, Echo Wall, and Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in sequence. The acoustic wonders of the Echo Wall and the gilded roof of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests are two major highlights.

Strategy tip:The Temple of Heaven Park Pass includes three main buildings, and it is recommended to purchase a pass for a comprehensive experience.

Spring tours can be accompanied by cherry blossoms in Yuyuantan Park (about a 30 minute drive from the Temple of Heaven) to experience the fusion of ancient architecture and nature.

Summer Palace: Landscape Poems of Royal Gardens

As a perfect combination of nature and culture in the itinerary of Beijing, the Summer Palace showcases the elegance of Jiangnan gardens and the magnificence of northern royalty, with Kunming Lake and Wanshou Mountain as the skeleton. Recommended route: Donggong Gate → Renshou Hall → Long Corridor → FoXiang Pavilion → Seventeen Arch Bridge. If you visit at night, you can enjoy the light show of the Buddha Fragrance Pavilion and the Seventeen Arch Bridge, and feel the dreamy light and shadow like an "ice ribbon".

Strategy tip:Kunming Lake Cruise requires an additional fee, and boating on the lake during spring and autumn seasons has a unique charm.

The months of March and April are the perfect time to shoot ancient style films with peach blossoms and magnolias in full bloom.

BaDaling Great Wall: The Heroic Spirit on the Back of the Giant Dragon

"He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a hero". The Badaling Great Wall is famous for its precipitousness and is the essence of the Ming Great Wall. Recommend climbing from the northern section to experience the steepness of the 'Hero Slope'. People with insufficient physical strength can choose the cable car to climb up and down the mountain, saving time and energy.

Strategy tip:Avoid the peak hours in the morning during holidays, as there are fewer tourists in the afternoon, making it suitable for leisurely sightseeing.

There is a "Great Wall Ball Screen Cinema" around the Great Wall, which provides a panoramic view of the history of the Great Wall through technological means.

Hutong: the soul of the capital city amidst the hustle and bustle of the city

The hutongs in Beijing are a microcosm of the interweaving of history and modernity. Recommend visiting Xibiao Hutong next to the Prince Gong's Mansion, visiting Yu Qian Temple and the old jujube tree, or strolling through Wudaoying Hutong to experience cultural cafes and handmade shops.

Deep Experience:Participate in the "Hutong Theme Art Exhibition" held by the National Centre for the Performing Arts, make prints by hand or listen to lectures on Peking Opera, and experience the diverse expressions of hutong culture.

The composite space "i-person study room" in the front fried noodle alley is suitable for quiet reading, while the Zaza dessert shop on the beach back street captures the taste buds with creative desserts.

Roast Duck: A Bite of the Capital's Jianghu

The Beijing itinerary cannot do without the taste feast of roasted duck. The time-honored brand "Quanjude" is famous for hanging roasted duck, and the Hepingmen store offers a panoramic view of the Forbidden City while tasting it; The emerging brand "Four Seasons Minfu" has a high cost-effectiveness in the Palace Museum store, and it is recommended to pair it with hawthorn strips to relieve greasiness; Da Dong "innovates the" crispy but not greasy "craftsmanship, combining technology and deliciousness.

Ordering Tips:The roasted duck skeleton can be processed into a salted and pepper duck rack or duck soup by the restaurant, which is a great value for two ducks per serving.

Beijing Opera: The Millennium Echoes of Hutongs and Alleyways

Deep in the hutongs, the art of Peking Opera is passed down in a unique way. You can go to the National Centre for the Performing Arts to participate in the lecture "In the Hutongs and Alleyways, When the Beijing Charm is Gentle", or visit the Mei Lanfang Memorial Hall to learn about the artistic life of famous Peking Opera masters. If time permits, the evening performance at Huguang Guild Hall is the perfect choice for an immersive experience.

Travel planning and practical advice

5-day classic route: Forbidden City → Temple of Heaven → Summer Palace → Great Wall → Hutong in depth tour, with a per capita budget of about 1500 yuan (including tickets, transportation, and dining).

Transportation: The subway covers the main attractions, but the Great Wall requires taking a dedicated bus or high-speed rail (Badaling Station).

Accommodation: Hotels near Qianmen Street are convenient for waking up early to watch the flag raising ceremony, while Shichahai Siheyuan Homestay is suitable for experiencing old Beijing life.

Understanding Beijing is not only a journey for the eyes, but also a deep dialogue with history, culture, and cuisine. From the imperial city to the common people, every step is a continuation of a millennium story.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
