Historical Overview
The hill’s name dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), when poets and scholars first documented its elephant-like silhouette. The Puxian Pagoda, perched atop the hill, was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 AD) as a Buddhist shrine dedicated to the bodhisattva Samantabhadra. Over millennia, the hill has inspired legends, including a myth about an elephant turned to stone by the Jade Emperor for refusing to return to heaven. In 1963, it was officially protected as a scenic spot, becoming a cornerstone of Guilin’s tourism industry.
