A few years ago, a mother brought her teenage son to Xi'an and Luoyang. She handed me a brutal three-day checklist: Terracotta Warriors, City Wall, Longmen Grottoes—all packed back-to-back. Her son, nose buried in his phone, clearly couldn't care less about ancient history. 

I pushed back. I told her we needed to cut half the checklist and slow down. Reluctantly, she agreed. Instead of rushing, I booked a quiet afternoon at the Beilin Museum—the Forest of Steles. It’s rarely crowded, just thousands of ancient stone tablets standing in the dim light. We happened to meet a local calligrapher there, quietly grinding ink and practicing his brushwork. The boy watched, completely captivated. For the next hour, his phone stayed in his pocket as the calligrapher explained how a single stroke could carry the weight of a thousand years. I didn't need to say a word.

That afternoon taught me that true expertise isn't about maximizing every minute. It's about editing a journey down to the moments that actually matter.
