Grassland Sky Road

Grassland Sky Road

Grassland Sky Road (Cao Yuan Tian Lu), stretching 132 km through Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, is China’s most iconic scenic byway. Constructed in 2012 as part of a wind power infrastructure project, the road ascends to 1,800 meters above sea level, weaving through grasslands, cypress forests, and terraced fields. Designated a national 4A-level tourist attraction in 2019, it features 22 observation decks, 18 wind turbines, and a 50-meter-high glass-bottomed lookout. The route merges renewable energy infrastructure with pastoralscapes, earning fame as "China’s Route 66."

Historical Overview

  • Construction Era (2011–2012): Built by China Guodian Corporation as a service road for the 100-MW Cypress Gorge Wind Farm.
  • Tourism Development (2015–Present): Upgraded with viewing platforms, rest stops, and digital signage after viral social media exposure.
  • Cultural Significance: Symbolizes China’s shift toward green energy, with turbines doubling as modern "wind sculptures."
  • Key Events: Hosted the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics torch relay leg and annual "Sky Road Marathon."

Structural Layout

The road follows a sinuous east-west path divided into three sections:

  1. Eastern Segment (0–40 km): Gentle slopes with cypress groves and the "Five-Flower Pasture" camping area.
  2. Central Segment (40–90 km): Steep hairpin turns, wind farms, and the 1,800-meter-high "Cloud-Piercing Pavilion."
  3. Western Segment (90–132 km): Volcanic rock canyons, solar panel arrays, and the "Sun Valley" photovoltaic park.

Key structures:

  • Glass-Bottomed Skywalk: A 50-meter悬空 platform overlooking the Cypress Gorge.
  • Wind Turbine Alley: A 3-km stretch flanked by 30-meter-tall windmill blades.

Major Attractions

  1. Cypress Gorge: A 200-meter-deep canyon with layered sedimentary rock formations.
  2. Wind Valley Observation Deck: Offers 360-degree views of 18 spinning turbines.
  3. Five-Flower Pasture: Seasonal meadows blooming with lupines, poppies, and edelweiss.
  4. Sun Valley Photovoltaic Park: A 1.2-sq-km solar farm with artistically arranged panels.
  5. Cloud-Piercing Pavilion: A Ming Dynasty-style tower rebuilt in 2018 with modern earthquake resistance.
  6. Volcanic Rock Trail: A 1.5-km hiking path through hexagonal basalt columns.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
