Why Every Other Mountain Just Feels…Meh After Zhangjiajie

As a traveler who loves exploring natural wonders, I have set foot in the Alps of Switzerland and the Grand Canyon of the United States, but it was not until I set foot in Zhangjiajie, Hunan, China, that I truly understood what a "fairyland on earth" is. This trip from Shanghai to Zhangjiajie completely overturned my understanding of mountains.

Day 1: Shanghai → Zhangjiajie, Expectations on High Speed Rail

Take the G1369 high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao Station (second-class seat ticket price is about ¥ 584, 9-hour journey), and travel all the way through the water towns of Jiangnan. When the train arrived at Zhangjiajie West Station, it was already evening, but the silhouette of the Wuling Mountains under the sunset had already made my heart beat faster. Staying at a hotel near Tianmen Mountain Cableway (about ¥ 300/night), you can open the window and see the clouds and mist of Baizhang Gorge, as if foreshadowing the upcoming shock.

Tips: It is recommended to book tickets in advance on the 12306 official website and choose a window seat with picturesque scenery along the way.

Day 2: Tianmen Mountain, heartbeat in the clouds

At 7am, I took the Tianmen Mountain Cableway (ticket ¥ 278 including round-trip). This 7.5-kilometer-long cableway can be called an "Airbus", and when crossing the sea of clouds, the whole person seems to be suspended in a fairyland. After arriving at the top of the mountain, go straight to the glass walkway - the abyss is at your feet, the cliffs and rocks are beside you, and every step is exciting to scream!

Must experience:

Tianmen Cave: Hike 999 steps (or take an escalator for ¥ 32) and gaze up at the natural mountain caves that are faintly visible in the clouds and mist.

Forest cable car: shuttle through the primitive secondary forest and encounter the macaque family (remember to hide snacks!).

Cost: Tianmen Mountain package ticket ¥ 278 (including cableway+environmental car), glass walkway shoe cover ¥ 5.

Day 3: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a 3D movie of nature

If Tianmen Mountain is the "City of the Sky", then the National Forest Park (ticket ¥ 227, valid on the 4th) is the "heart of the earth". Stepping into the Golden Whip Creek, the water is clear to the bottom, and wild monkeys jump on the branches, as if walking into the "Floating Mountain" in the movie Avatar.

Essence Scenic Spots:

Yuan Jiajie: Take the Hundred Dragon Sky Ladder (¥ 65) for 1 minute to reach the summit, and up close, look up at the "Pillar of Heaven and Earth" - the prototype of the "Floating Mountain" in the Avatar movie.

Tianzi Mountain: A group of stone pillars such as the Imperial Brush Peak and Fairy Scattered Flowers, which make people marvel at the amazing craftsmanship of nature.

Shili Gallery: Walking or small train (¥ 38), along which there are many wonders such as "Three sisters Peak" and "Old Man Collecting Medicines".

Tips: Environmentally friendly cars are free in the park. It is recommended to wear non slip shoes as some mountain roads are steep.

Day 4: Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, the Courage Test of Glass Bridge

If the glass walkway of Tianmen Mountain is just a "front dish", then the glass bridge of the Grand Canyon (ticket+bridge ticket ¥ 219) is the "main dish". This transparent bridge spanning the canyon is 430 meters long and 300 meters high. Standing on the bridge, the abyss under your feet is clearly visible. As the wind passes, the bridge deck sways slightly, and adrenaline surges in a straight line!

Hidden gameplay:

Canyon zip line: Flying down from the mountaintop (¥ 50), enjoy the dual stimulation of speed and beautiful scenery.

Bandit Village: Visit century old stilted houses and learn about the bandit culture in western Hunan.

Day 5: The ancient city of Phoenix, a peaceful place spanning thousands of years

Take a bus from Zhangjiajie (about 4 hours, ¥ 120) to Fenghuang Ancient City, where the stilted houses by the Tuo River, bluestone paved roads, and handmade silver ornaments by Miao grandmothers form a painting in ink. Night tour of the ancient city, lanterns reflecting in the river, folk songs coming from the bar, as if they were from another world.

Experience:

Rent a set of Miao costumes (¥ 50/day) and take photos under Hongqiao.

Taste ginger candy and blood duck (¥ 60 per person) and experience the taste of Xiangxi.

Travel Summary: Why Zhangjiajie is irreplaceable?

Unique landforms: Quartz sandstone peak forests are rare worldwide, with each stone pillar being a natural sculpture dating back 380 million years.

Cultural immersion: From Tujia preserved meat to Miao silver jewelry, food and intangible cultural heritage are within reach.

Convenient transportation: High speed rail and direct access to scenic spots make exploration stress free

Total cost:

Transportation: Shanghai → Zhangjiajie high-speed railway ¥ 584, local transportation is about ¥ 300.

Admission: Tianmen Mountain ¥ 278+Forest Park ¥ 227+Grand Canyon ¥ 219.

Accommodation: 4 nights totaling ¥ 1200 per person.

Catering: ¥ 800 (try authentic dishes such as San Xia Guo and Hao Zi Ba).

When I left Zhangjiajie, my camera memory card was already full, but I knew that even the most advanced equipment could not fully capture the shock here. If you are tired of "ordinary" mountains, come to Zhangjiajie - every peak here is a masterpiece of the gods, and every cloud hides a poetic soul.
