No Alipay or WeChat Pay in China - What to Do in 2026

— An Honest Travel Guide by IntoTravelChina

No Alipay or WeChat Pay -- what to do? The good news is that 2026 is the easiest year yet to pay in China without these apps. I have been guiding travelers to China since 2015, and I remember when guests had to carry thick stacks of cash everywhere. That is no longer the case. A new regulation from February 2026 now requires all merchants to accept cash. On top of that, several new payment options have appeared specifically for international visitors.

Cash Is Back -- and Legally Protected

Since February 1, 2026, Chinese law requires every physical store to accept RMB cash. This is a major change. If a shop tries to refuse your cash, they are breaking the law. I tested this myself at a small restaurant in Shanghai last month. The owner initially said card only. I pointed to the new regulation. He accepted my cash without argument.

Carry 200 to 500 RMB in small bills. Break larger notes at hotels or convenience stores. Cash works everywhere -- taxis, street vendors, markets, local restaurants. It is the simplest backup and requires no setup.

The Digital Yuan Card: No App, No Internet Needed

China's digital yuan -- e-CNY -- is available as a physical hard wallet card. You can buy one at major airports in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Qingdao by presenting your passport. The card works offline via NFC, supports payments up to a reasonable daily limit, and charges zero transaction fees. It can even combine payment, SIM card, and transit pass functions into one card.

I bought one for a guest from Germany at Beijing Capital Airport. He loaded it with 2,000 RMB, used it for the entire ten-day trip -- metro, meals, museum tickets -- and had about 100 RMB left. He said it was the easiest payment method he had ever used in a foreign country. No app, no phone battery worries, no internet needed.

International Cards Are Widely Accepted at Hotels and Big Stores

Visa and Mastercard work reliably at international hotels, high-end malls, and airline offices. Most ATMs accept them for cash withdrawals. But smaller shops, restaurants, and taxis rarely accept cards. Do not rely on plastic as your only payment method.

The Bottom Line for 2026 Travelers

To summarize: no Alipay or WeChat Pay -- what to do? Carry cash, get an e-CNY hard wallet card at the airport, and use your international card for hotels and large purchases. These three methods cover every situation you will encounter. You do not need to install any Chinese payment app to travel comfortably in China in 2026.

Payment ready, worry gone

Most of my guests tell me payment is their biggest worry before their first China trip. Once you have these three options ready at the airport, you won't think about it again. The e-CNY card handles daily life, cash covers everything else, and your card takes care of hotels. That's really all you need in 2026.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
